It seems we've got a pretty varied group here, and I'm always interested to hear other things people are into, so other hobbies/obsessions do you guys have?

I'm a bit of a hobby jumper, I dabble in electronics, been in and out of the saltwater fish/coral game, play paintball (and mostly enjoy teching paintball guns), played in the 3d printing world for a while, and pretty much get into anything culinary wise that I can.

Grilling, smoking, meat, pizzas, braises, fishing, building stuff, growing things, exercising to balance it all out

Guitar , rock climbing, fly tying/fishing, lately been getting into bladesmithing and trying to learn how to mod effect pedals without making them paperweights.

I think I'm fairly rare here since I haven't seen anyone else mention this.

I shoot. Pistols, rifles, shotguns. Do a little pistol shooting in a league, mostly just to keep the skill at some basic level. Do a little 3-gun (pump shotgun, lever-action rifle, 1911 pistol), and I shoot trap.

I also reload for all of it. That part reminds me in a way of brewing. Lots of variables, but in the end what you get and how it functions is under your control.

However, and this rule is inviolable: alcohol and firearms do not mix. I'm sitting here drinking a homebrew, and while I could do to reload some pistol ammo, not, not ever, when I've had a drink. All it takes is one little lapse in attention and you've got a problem, something you won't realize until you pull the trigger.

I used to do quite a bit of shooting, some trap, mostly just basic marksmanship. Trying to maintain the skill-level from bolt-action hunting as a kid, and assault rifle marksmanship from the military. Was at one point going to get into competition shooting, but I'm getting too old/lazy for that.

Now I'm mostly getting into nutrition, food prep/preservation, and trying to get back into shape. Also, quite a bit of reading. A pile of books on brewing, and quite a few on history, philosophy, and some fiction.

Was thinking about maybe picking up a guitar, but I'm definitely feeling the old/lazy/no patience thing.

I used to do a fair amount of shooting as well, a little 3-gun, and some Single action stuff - I just never get the time to anymore

I've recently gotten into bbq-smoking with a wsm.

Other than than I run and swim.

I'm also into 4X4 wheeling.

I feel like it'd be way more challenging
Inshore is usually smaller boats, going in a circle, or around here, between two bridges on the Columbia River, a lot of tacking but really helps get you honed in boat handling and how to read the sails. Offshore, it is a 24/7 operation with little sleep but the plus is bigger boats, usually on the same tack for days on end but when the weather gets bad, it takes excitement up 11. I crewed on a boat 4 years ago from Ft Lauderdale to Bermuda and we had a good blow in the middle of night, 2AM on the foredeck getting pounded with waves while trying to wrestle down a sail... it is the best worse time you can have and I cannot wait to get to back out there next month, taking the same boat from Antigua to Grenada. :mug:

I was basically joking, saying onshore it'd be hard to get anywhere

I (and my wife) play pickleball. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the US and if you've never heard of it there are hundreds of YouTube vids to check it out. It's roughly a smaller, slower version of tennis - good for us old fogies! I like the agility workout and maintaining hand/eye coordination in my old age…:D

We are looking to buy a home to renovate. We like the many projects that come with putting our mark on a home.

I play baseball and do a little genealogy...also an avid reader but don't get much done during the school year not enough time

I shoot a good bit. Primarily plinking with .22's and pistols, but also like to shoot informal bench rest. My favorite is wing shooting, and absolutely live for dove season. I am giving serious consideration to joining the local gun club and getting into skeet/sporting clays. Membership is reasonable but the initiation is a years dues, so I am waiting until our baby gets here in June to determine if it is something I have time for.

Also enjoy boating, as can be found on the water more weekends than not (year round).

Fishing, playing computer games, also we do a decent bit of growing our own veg and fruit. Do a decent bit of building with wood, mostly docks, outbuildings etc.

I am ham radio operator going on 4 yrs now, have my grand dad's original call sign from 1973. He wanted me to get my license back then when I was 10 yrs old. As a kid back then I thought there were funner things to do like fishing, bikes and baseball, but I never lost the desire to get my license. Fast forward 40 yrs later and I finally got that license, and as a tribute to the guy who thought it was important to try and learn something new everyday, I took his original call sign WN8QGV.

I also have been a beekeeper for 40+ years, and thankfully with retirement I can enjoy citizen science type things like weather reporting thru my personal weather station, CocoRahs involvement, Project Feederwatch (birds), Monarch watch ( butterflies) FlightAware ( I have an antenna that picks up and reports live aircraft positioning within a 300 mile range of my home), gardening, hunting, fishing, and train travel.

At one time when I lived in a more populous area, I raised and raced homing pigeons against other pigeon racers. ( Had a hell of a time finding running shoes in those tiny sizes :) )

I play guitar and bass. I like customizing guitars. I have a Jackson Randy Rhodes Flying V that I put some Seymour Duncan AHB-1 blackout pickups in and I use Ernie Ball cobalt slinky strings. Man I love that guitar. Haven’t been playing much lately though. I have an AR-15 and a .22 rifle that I like to use for target practice but I don’t hunt. 3 gunning does sound like a lot of fun. I also play video games ALOT. My favorite is the dark souls genre. I used to be in to body building but screwed up my shoulder and took time off then just lost interest. Lastly I like wood burning and wood working. I like to make my own tap handles. I wave a wood burned dragon and a goat. Oh yeah and I have an aquarium that I am getting pretty tired of haha.

Small world!
I've been brewing off and on for about 8 years now and been a ham for 3.5 years.

I have my Great Grandfather's last callsign before he passed (W6WGF) which he got in the 50s or so. But he was first licensed in 1927 as 8DEQ (they didn't even have prefixes then).

I've got a bunch of his old QSL cards from the 30s and 40s and even one dx card from 1928.

You can check it out on my QRZ page.

Well, these are past hobbies - French alpine cheesemaking; not sure you could call it a hobby because it's what I did for 40+ years, French cuisine; hanggliding; scuba diving - open ocean, night, lobster, scallop, abalone, and flatfish hunting; reef and habitat restoration on the Channel Islands off S. California; martial arts (aikido, iaido - lived as a full-time, direct apprentice in a Japanese martial and zen temple); live plant freshwater aquariums; writing; reading western history; exhausting certain novelists; Gypsy swing, Django Reinhardt-styled acoustic swing; played rhythm guitar (started a group still going strong years later, very gratified to see. Can't play any longer, myself - but love the music still). Acting wouldn't really be a hobby since I was a pro, but that, too - a lot of stage in Chicago, Shakespeare back East, some small films here and there in LA. Loved it singularly when I was pursuing it.

Used to hunt. Archery in its day. Last 20 or so years, had a thing for shoulder artillery. Mine was a Marlin 45-70 lever, which I loaded hot. Cast my own wide-meplat, hard-cast bullets. Suitable for anything in N. America. Enjoyed the .338 WM as well. Ruger Blackhawk .44 magnum which again, I loaded hot. Like recoil, I guess, nuts as that really is (had to pull it back on the revolver as I was starting to jack my right wrist). Gave these, and all my guns, up. No longer want to hunt, and no longer want to own firearms.

Cool article on your great grandad. Like you, I have some of my grandads qsl cards from the time he was on the air. He was 64 when he first got his license. Since he was just learning the code, he used the low wpm send/receive areas of the bands, and most of the qso's were with hams just starting out who were in their teens. Fortunately for me, and with the help of QRZ, I have been able to track down some of his contacts who are still active. I have received several replies back and a couple of his qsl cards that he had sent out. I have also sent cards to operators who state in the qsl that he was their first contact on ham radio. I think those type of cards belong back to where they started from. My OMISS # is 10057 and I check into the 20 and 40 meter net on a daily basis. Hope to see you further down the log. Bill WN8QGV

I hunt & fish and process all of my own game, spend a lot of time smoking meat and cooking in general, love to shoot my guns and my bow, work with my dogs occasionally (Chocolate Lab & German Shorthaired Pointer), spend as much time in the mountains as I can year round, and my six year old daughter and one year old son take up the rest of my time.

I ride with a M/C club, own 3 Harleys. I cook on a charcoal grill at least once a week all year long, no matter the weather. Love to smoke meat on my Bradley.

Smoking meats, sous vide cooking, taco adventuring and hand-rolling my own authentic swabian Maultaschen.

Non-food related hobbies include building and flying model airplanes, building and sailing model boats, both sailboats and powerboats, and tinkering with, riding and maintaining my old German bicycle.

I just finished cleaning up my smoker. Ready to start smoking meats again. Sous vide is also the tits. Love that little immersion circulator!
