Other hobbies besides homebrew..

Besides homebrewing I've been a musician for ~twenty years, primarily guitar, bass and drums. I own a project studio and also do audio engineering (recording, mixing, etc) on the side. I play mostly heavy metal/hard rock styles, although I have a background in blues guitar. My studio has a myspace account at http://www.myspace.com/462studio All of the songs by Mechanisma are my personal solo project.

I probably have too many hobbies, just not enough time.

Remodeling/renovating/home improvement/fixing or building anything - This is my day job, but I enjoy it so much I constantly find new things to do to my house too. I've run out of rooms to remodel so I'm thinking of an addition to the master bedroom now.

Computers, gaming and custom PC's - This has always been a hobby, and is now also a small side business. Computers were basically "bred" into me, but I never could stand the thought of sitting in a cubicle coding all day, so it's always just been a hobby until I started a small business building them about a year and a half ago.

BBQ - I love smoking meats, or just grilling for everyone.

Jeeps & offroading - Currently Jeepless, but have owned a 1947 Willy's CJ2A, '99 Wrangler (totalled), and a '00 Wrangler that was the only brand new vehicle I have ever owned. I did some major modifying to this Jeep, but ended up selling it after getting married and it sitting in the driveway for about 5 years. Only had 33k miles at 9 years old. I miss my Jeep.

Off Shore Fishing - This I only get to do one week a year when I go see my Dad in FL who is REALLY into off shore fishing.

Politics - Not so much a hobby, but something I try to keep up on and spend time doing.

And after a friend got a gift certificate to a LHBS for Christmas, I added brewing to the list which has now consumed a good portion of the time otherwise spent on the others. This hobby is just so rewarding though!

Ha, I'm a former airline captain ATP CFII MEI....which means I haven't been able to afford to fly in over a year. I don't know how anyone can afford to fly for recreation with the price of 100LL and rentals these days.

I'm moving to Colorado this spring and I'm hoping that there's a better job market for part time flight instructors .

I started on this one but now build my own 3D foamies. The plane above will allow you to get into some mild aerobatics and is easy to fly for a beginner.

i have a small business i run mostly as a hobby crocheting hats and making apparel
i like soap making
and i have a girlfriend which takes up a lot of my time trying to help her save the world.

I guess i would also like to add small business development to this list. right now I'm working in an office as a research assistant for small business development. it's fun seeing something you've worked on become something people enjoy and depend on. I feel like i want to start my own business some day but I'm too lazy for that so i figure i'll just help other people do it and live vicariously through all my clients.

My biggest is amateur sportscar racing. I race an old Porsche in a Spec series (single model and identicaly prepared with limited modifications) for Porsche 944's and 924s's. I'm in the blue car, #42, racing at Sear's Point/Infineon Raceway:

Yes, I do all my own maintenance on the race car and all my other cars, with the occasional assistance from friends and fellow racers.


I also do a lot of rock climbing (primarily indoor).

Also, social dancing, primarily Blues, Swing, and Argentine Tango.

I used to sail a lot. Ferried a boat through the Caribbean and raced on my college sailing team.

I have my pilots license, but haven't flown for years. I need cheaper hobbies, like racing old Porsches.

Others I see are common would be guns/shooting and motorcycling. Does that tie into hombrewers' traits at all? Or is that coincidence?

Lots of awesome hobbies!

Just getting into brewing but I imagine that's going to be the main hobby soon.

Gardening, trying to produce as much food as we need, hopefully next year I'll get closer to that goal.

Taking care of a small slice of heaven, chickens, goats, dogs, small orchard...

Freshwater planted aquariums, used to be saltwater but I missed the green of the plants so I've gone back to FW, cheaper than SW too!

Helping my wife get a soapmaking business off the ground hoping we can grow it enough to support us so I don't have to leave every day to make someone else rich...

Oh and shooting squirrels... rats with fluffy tails.... thieving conniving little....

The squirrels aren't a problem here, it's the chipmunks. I have several in, and around, my garden, but they're too quick to shoot. The dogs don't even bother to chase them, they'll run a few feet, and when the chipmunk runs, they stop. They have several burrows around the yard, and I've seen them jump down one, and come up in another one. I bet the ground under my yard has more holes than swiss cheese.

Good thread indeed. I think the Cooking/woodworking go with homebrewing for sure. They are all DIY things...Just like the DIY thread is one of the most popular on HBT.

Guns/shooting...not so sure if they go well with beer or drinking at all, however, they are a blast...

Knucks to all the climbers even if you climb in a gym....lol (there are none where I live otherwise I would have a membership)

Hobbies involving precision, patience, creativity, experimentation, and a general value of self-reliance. Also, an interest in acquiring and learning how to use new and interesting toys... I mean "tools".

I find a lot of people on other interest boards (namely motorsports) with a general combination of: motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles, and/or airplanes), guns, and one or more craftsman hobbies (woodworking, metalworking, welding, etc.).
