newbie here... I've made a batch with a Mr. Beer kit in the past, and recently decided to get myself a 6gallon starter kit from the local supply store.
The sales guy then sold me a 1.5kg morgan's canadian light extract and kg of corn sugar. After reading taking the plastic lid off the extract can and reading the instructions, I see that the instructions call for the 1kg corn sugar to be added to the wort.

The problem is, I didn't realize that I was buying the sugar for the wort... I thought it was for carbonation.

My question is, do I have to use sugar to make the wort, or can I use another can of extract instead? If so, any suggestions on what kind and how much of extract to use in replace of that 1kg sugar?

Typically, for 5 gallons, you would only need <0.14kg for carbonation. If you simply hold on to 0.14kg, then you can use the rest for the beer. Alternatively, you can use <0.14kg of regular old white table sugar for carbonation instead and use the entire kg of corn sugar for your beer.

On the other hand, you can use more extract instead of corn sugar for the beer and save your corn sugar for carbonating this (and many more) beers.

The possibilities are endless :D

You can use more extract instead of sugar, but that will make for a maltier beer with a high FG. That's either good or bad, depending what you want out of this recipe.

You need to replace the sugar with something of the same level of extract to get the same OG (again, if that's what you want). Typically sugar is roughly 45ppg and LME is 36ppg. So 1.25kg LME will replace your 1kg of sugar to get the same OG.
