Opinion on tile

I am going to tile the kitchen tomorrow.

What do you like better, a distinct pattern, or random sizes?

My objective in this photo was to not have any 4 point corners.

Do you think this would look better, or a "french pattern" repeating

The largest tiles are 16x24.

Random breaks up the space, uniformity is; well, uniform!

You haven't started already have you? If so, STOP!!!

Since you put down cement board (CB) I assume what's underneath is a wooden floor.

Adding CB to a wooden floor requires a screw EVERY 6-8 inches not just on the perimeter and joises like dry wall. If you don't screw the CB firmly to the floor the tiles will end up breaking when you walk on them.

I see the screws (6X8) near the cabinets, but not in the bottom right of the picture...that's not enough screws...and is that a broken tile?

Thanks Dunerunner, the pattern eith those particular sizes and shapes is called french. The tile is travertine, Italian.

HomeBrewer, Thanks for the heads up. There is wood beneath. I pulled up particle board and added an additional layer of plywood which is glued and screwed to the subfloor.

1 1/4" total of plywood, then thinset and backerboard, screwed with a billion screws. I don't know why you cannot see them in that area of the pic, I went back and looked again because it does look like some are missing, but they are there.

Yes we have a few broken tiles, it was drop shipped to our house from an importer in Tampa. I'll cut that one.

I like thinner grout lines with this tile, Do you know any reason not to use 1/8" grout lines?

Just wanted to make sure all that work wasn't going to go to waste.

I know it's hard work. I tiled 2 bathrooms and about 2/3rds of my basement.

I went with the pattern, it is random enough, and each tile is unique so it is not a very noticeable pattern. A bit tough to follow at first.

Because it is raw stone, I have sealed once today, and will grout next weekend, then seal again. Alot of work, the tile is 1/2 inch thick so a b1tch to cut and heavy. The large tiles are 16 x 24. Worth it I think for the real stone floor. And hopefully in the resale..

The French pattern looks a lot nicer. I just hope you have a wet saw and knee pads handy.
