Someone was actually asking for $400 for a glass? And someone else actually bought it?

$400 doesn't seem unreasonable if it were actually the real thing, rather than a fake such as the one sold.

On the first BA thread I personally saw about the Iris glass, an offer of Framboos 2011 + Narke Stormkatsporter was turned down for one.

which means they will be for sale on Cantillon's webstore, etre and biab for $20-30 with shipping in the near term.

That poor stupid bastard.

Well it remains to be seen whether the bar that was using them for zwanze day had them made up or if cantillon actually licensed them.

I just cannot fathom this. Yes, it is rare, but it is just glassware. Ultimately, any other similarly designed glass would work as well for drinking, so I realize it is about collecting it. But it just boggles the mind that somebody would pay that for a single beer glass, especially when they are obviously a beer fan and could buy a considerable amount of beer (or one or two whales) for that price.

I completely agree with you, by "not unreasonable" I meant relative to what these have apparently gone for in the past and/or what has been legitimately offered for them.

A glass can be used many times and a beer is a one shot and done proposition. I'd think the old iris glass would be worth close to double that price. The horror. The horror.

You should see what I paid for a small piece of carbon.

Well yes, diamonds are absurdly priced, in no small part due to their artificial scarcity and cultural conditioning through very smart ad campaigns started long ago. But, I would argue, at least it has a greater utility in demonstrating commitment.

Though your post does raise a good question: do I find the price here so outrageous only because, unlike diamonds or famous art, I have been conditioned to expect glassware to be relatively cheap, rather than a luxury item? Maybe. After all, I suppose collecting this is no more insane than collecting stamps or coins.

I got my engagement/wedding ring back from my ex-wife when we got divorced, I'm not sure how much money I can get for it (retail value was something around $4000), but I'm hoping it can finance a chunk of my LASIK surgery. I suppose there's some metaphor about using a diamond to give me crystal clear eyes but I'm not the poetic type.
