Omni Mead Site - Batch Builder

Does anyone have experience using the batch builder on this site? The nutrients seem to be pretty high, especially at a lower ABV. It's the site of Bray Dennard of BOMM fame so I'm more than less inclined to try it out.

For a 5 gallon batch of a 6% mead it suggests:
9.5g Fermaid-K
17.0g Fermaid-O
10g yeast
12.5g Go-Germ

A typical TOSNA nutrient regimen would be something like:
8.6g Fermaid-O
5g Yeast
6.3g Go-Ferm

In TOSNA sessions, the nutrients can be a bit high especially as it doesn't take into account nitrogen added by the Go-Ferm. The OmniMead ones seem to be through the roof. At a higher ABV it doesn't seem to be too far away from what TOSNA might suggest.

I was planning on doing a 5 gallon session how I normally would and another based on their builder and compare results at the end... but I don't want nutrient soup!

With experience with BOMM sessions, I highly recommend trusting your instincts and looking into TANG nutrient protocol.

That is pretty much what I was thinking about. I think they may need to tailor that builder a bit for the lower ABV stuff.

Bray tends to make most of his meads @ 16% or higher. I have made quite a few of his recipes & they all came in over 16%. I would probably go with what you would normally go with for a session. Or, take TOSNA measurements for say a normal batch & divide the nutrients by 1/3 or so, should be roughly around the sweet spot?
That said, I've never made a session, so I may be wrong, but it sounds logical .

I've used the omni batch builder for a session mead (about 6% abv with w15 yeast) and it worked great. Haven't used fermaid k though, only fermaid o.

Did you substitute additional Fermaid-O for the Fermaid-K or just eliminate it?

Used the Carbonate?

As I look back at the suggested, it would seem that the nutrients are basically doubled up as it is suggesting using twice the yeast that I would normally use. That puts it close to TOSNA but also with the addition of Fermaid-K. It still seems like a lot for a low ABV batch unless the double batch of yeast is going to use it all.

I'm making the assumption that the high yeast pitch is to really get a fast, clean, ferment. Maybe that high yeast amount does ferment cleaner and will chew through all the nutrients before using up all the honey? That's really my worry; that there will be nutrients left over.

FWIW, the high yeast pitch is exactly what TANG specifically addresses.

Wow, that stuff really seems to make a difference. I wonder if this can be utilised in beer brewing as well!?

I have some of that and I'm planning to make two batches where one uses it and the other doesn't to see how it comes out.
I just need my project load to give me a break.
