I made a starter tOday from a yeas that expired oct9th. It was whitelabs California. It was a peanut butter color at the top 1/4 inch. The rest was white. It smelled fine. Should it be alright?

Yeah, you'll be fine. I agree with woodstone; I have also successfully used yeast that was over a year old. Almost 3 months old is no worry.

Just make sure you make a starter for your beer to ensure that the yeast are healthy and happy. Older yeast vials may have fewer viable molecules, so to ensure that you get the best possible outcome, make a starter! :)
