Oktoberfest Munich

Hello all...I am going to Munich next month for a little German brew and wanted to know if anyone was also going. I would like to perhaps connect with someone or a group who has tent reservations so we can have access to the tents more easily. There are two in my party. Otherwise if anyone else has ideas about negotiating different tents that would be great. It's my first time to Europe!

I've been 3 times, 2006, 2007, and last year. The group I go with has been going since 2003 I think, and will be there again. Bunch of Auburn University guys, the one that organizes everything is from Atlanta. The website, munich-bound.com hasn't been updated in a year or so, but you could get in touch with Mark on there and he'll see what he can do as far as tent reservations. What days are you going? We usually go the last week and are there for "closing". That being said, if it's just the two of you, you should be good to go. You should be able to find a spot at most tents, at least outside in their outdoor seating areas. Hofbrau is easiest for Americans, it's the biggest, but it's also more touristy. The "pigpen" in the middle of the tent, you don't have to have a seat to order a beer, but it does live up to its name. You have to have a seat to order a beer at all other places. I prefer the beer at Augustiner, but they're all good (although, I think the Paulaner is only passable when you have the other 5 excellent choices).
Be polite when asking about a seat, the outdoor areas are usually first come first serve. But don't be shy either, you'll lose your seat. Go early in the day, especially on Saturday. I'm jealous, I'll be back, but it'll be a while for me.

I haven't been since I was in the Air Force over there 97-99, but we always had the most fun at the Spaten tent. But the biggest thing is, don't just stay in just one place. The whole fest is pretty darn awesome; you'll meet people from all over the planet.
Oh, don't hit the schnapps tents and then ride the carnival rides. I had a horrible experience of puking on probably 20+ people who were down below as the damn ride kept spinning and spinning...

I'm heading over there next month. I'm flying into Prague first for a few days and driving through Pilzen to the Pilsner Urquell brewery and then on to Munich. I was there two years ago on the 200th anniversary. It was great.

As far as the tents go, you don't need a reservation. If you can get there a little early would make it easier to get in to the beer tents. The first night we got there, we were able to get a space at a table for 3 around 7pm in the Augustiner tent. I think we were pretty lucky...

The wife and I lived in Germany for a few years and only went once. It's fun, but can be pretty crazy. It's definitely best if you know someone with reservations.

Are you doing anything else while there? There's so much in the area to see. Quite easy to get around Bavaria on the train with a Bayern pass, which I think is about 25 euros and good for all day and four people.

I'm not sure what airline your flying, but the flight attendant union for Lufthansa are going on strike. Not every flight is a problem, but they are cancelling as many as a few hundred flights. I hope they get this issue taken care of in the next 2 1/2 weeks or I might be screwed... WTF!!!
