i brewed a clone recipe from AHS that was suppose to be a Harpoon IPA. the beer came out much darker, not quite as bitter, but more flavorful. i liked it better than the Harpoon but i thought it would come out at least close to what i thought i was brewing. why is this?

Did you use an extract? That could be one reason why it's darker. Lot's of reasons could be why it's more flavorful. Different temps while fermenting. Hops and how long they were boiled.

My first "homebrew" was a Mr. Beer "experiment."

I then did an extract Nut Brown Ale from Northern Brewer and I could drink the hydrometer sample all day long. Nothing special, didn't deviate from the recipe, etc.

It's not even in the bottles yet and I can tell it will be good.
