It took about a year and it was batch #13. Thank God. I was about to lose faith in homebrewing completely after so many bad beers, and then the light shoneth downeth uponeth my beer glass and said 'Lo! And Verily I Say Unto You! THe light of the Lord upon Thine Goblet!'
 
12 bad batches!!! I don't mean to be rude; but, homebrew is kinda like pizza and sex, even when its bad its still pretty good. Congrats on finding your faith...now you need to figure out what you did that worked and repeat.
 
More importantly, do you know what you did on this batch differently so you can repeat it? Have you identified the issue that caused the first 12 bad batches?
 
I went 3 good batches and then 5 bad batches when I first started out. SANITATION WAS MY KEY TO SUCCESS! IT WILL BE YOURS TOO! also replace your hoses often.
 
I don't know... I've had some pretty ****ty pizza.


Well you know, sometimes a pizza gets burned or a chick gives you an itch. But those are the outliers. Pay attention to the oven, be faithful to your lady, and mind your brew and all will rarely fail to please you.

Write everything down every time you brew so you'll have a log of why your beer sucks... or is awesome.

Just curious about what made your previous beers bad? Was it recipe formulation, not getting good efficiency, sanitization??? I only ask because since I moved to all grain about 5-6 months ago I have brewed about 15 batches. The first 2 tasted decent but the beers were around %3-4 since my efficiency was off. My 4th or 5th my efficiency was to high and I ended up with a %7.5 instead of 5.5%, it was to malty but still decent and after 2 glasses it tasted great :p I also had one batch that got infected. I guess my point is that all of my AG brews have turned out to be good beers (except the infected one) so I'm wondering why you didn't like yours.
 
I had three batches in the middle which all had the same, unidentifiable off-flavor. These were my worst, were totally undrinkable, and could either be traced to the malt I used (I bought some locally grown/kilned malt), or to the yeast I had harvested.

Every other beer I made was drinkable, but not great. This last beer is the only one that tasted as good as some of my favorite commercial IPAs.

My process has been essentially the same, and my recipes are about the same. I honestly don't know why this one turned out so good. I did end up using about 3/4 lb of hops, so maybe the hop juice just overpowered off flavors.
 
Yup. Hops can hide a lot. Brew some low hop beers with a clean yeast and then your process issues will start to make themselves obvious.
