On October 14, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed H.R. 1337, which contained an amendment sponsored by Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) creating an exemption from taxation of beer brewed at home for personal or family use. This exemption went into effect on February 1, 1979, making homebrewing legal on a federal level in the U.S.

How many of you brewed beer before then? Count me in. [emoji481]

I was 4 yrs old lol. 40 yrs of home brewing, dang that's a long time brewing. Interesting fact though . Thanks for the info.

It fractures me how many people I talk to still think homebrewing is illegal. It's not a still, folks, it's BEER. These same people want to know if I can sell my homebrew. On a side note, Mr. Carter is our oldest surviving former President, and at his age he's still out there every weekend working his a** off for Habitat for Humanity. One hell of a good guy.
