First, if you think the presidents 2 centuries ago were anywhere as busy as a president is today, you really need to go back to your history books, asap.

Second: that comparison is unfair, to say the least. Yeah, in the 18th century, everybody and their dog was a brewer. George Washington was also a moonshiner. But you can't compare those times with now.
There's been 20 presidents since 1900 (if we count W. McKinley, who left the office in 1901). How many of them have been home brewers?

It was not seen as a full-time job, indeed, at the beginning, could not have been. The presidency has grown with the country, largely due to a series of national crises, to be an office that has accumulated customary power that would horrify any of the Founders. Nevertheless, through Congress, we've allowed the Presidency to become this, and we're stuck with it.....good and bad things.

Now if you'll pardon me, I have to do something more important than to comment about the COOTWH*, namely compile a list of ingredients for my Spring brewing!

Exactly. And that's the reason why the comparison isn't fair. For many reasons (and not only for the accumulation of power (that's a bit naive)), the workload of the president has increased dramatically, especially in the last80 or 90 years, and the circumstances have changed. In the times of Washington, not only it was common for people to make their own beer (BMC didn't exist, and neither did refrigeration, or pasteurization, among other things), but it was also common for them to do many other things, like their own soap, cheese, jams, etc, for 2 simple reasons: they had the timme, and they had the need.

I won't pardon you. I thank you. I wish everybody here had the good sense (and the respect for the OP, the forum owners/mods, and their fellow members, to do the same. This thread is a comment about Obama's homebrew, not about his presidency, and this forum is about homebrewing, not politics. The fact that some members here have chosen to repeatedly ignore other members' request to keep politics out of the forum, only speaks about them, not about the president.

His approval ratings just soared up .00000001%!!!!!!!!;) (the homebrewing slice of americans)

This is his problem, he needs to be LOUDER about the good things he does.

Yes, because Obama drank a Bud Light during the famous beer summit from 2009....
My guess is that it was shortly after that meeting when he heard about homebrewing. I can just see some friend, staffer or supporter stalking the guy for months waiting for an opportunity to deliver the spiel that all of us have committed to memory: "You grow your own veggies and go to farmers markets but you drink that? George Washington/preservatives/yellow fizzy/here try this/lhbs/etc. etc. etc."

It wasn't me, so it must have been one of you. :D

I never said anything about being a muslim or his birth place..All that assuming will get you in trouble..

The fact that he's not acting 'as' socialist to the degree as was expected, has no bearing on his ideology/world view... nor does it mean he is not acting in socialist ways..

It means, there is only so much the American People will put up with, and as such have neutered him to some degree, and that he has gotten into office and has decided it's a pretty cush lifestyle, and wants another term at it...

You can tell much more about a man by who his friends are, and who his enemies are, than you can by what he says, or what he does at any given snapshot period of his life....

Who he surrounds himself with, and who he turns to for advice tell the story...

Not drinking anything at the moment.. That's for later after the days 'to do list' has been first addressed...

this makes no sense at all.

r8rphan and mhenry, there is a debate forum on this site for a reason. This thread is for people who want to talk about how cool it is that the prez is (indirectly) making homebrew.

And I would hire lackeys that are hot chicks in skimpy outfits....

Wait.. I'm starting to sound like Sheen.. or Ghaddafi...

No, it sounds good Charlie, but up the homebrew and cut back on the coke.;)

I would device recipes and brew it, but the secretary of state would have to clean up using a toothbrush.

Lol.

Seriously, I would have one bearded "Master Brewer" and 10 skimpily cladded assistants. I would hand him 1 new recipe each day, and he would oversee the fields of grain, the hopyard, the brewery, the skimpily clad assistants, and the distillery. All for 250K or so a year.

I will start taking applications Thursday...;)

What he said.

After 17 pages, I can't believe no one has speculated on whether it was an extract, partial mash, or all grain batch...

Damn. That made this thread worthy of the re-bump. Now I am wondering what technique/equipment they used...and what yeast strain.

I was wondering the same thing. Figured they have to doing extract or partial, unless the person actually brewing it has some brewing experience under their belt.

I was thinking extract with steeping grains is pretty likely. That would be easier for the White House chefs to make it if that was their first brewing attempt.

It really pisses me off to hear about Him making beer in the White House and it is illegal in here in Mississippi. That is just wrong. Dont forget about Oklahoma and Alabama either. Let see Him do something about it.

Need I remind everyone that it wouldn't be a good idea to talk about "Bottle Bombs" when the Secret Service is around...?

I just pictured a Secret Service agent throwing himself on the bottle while the others spirit the pres away...

I was just listening to Michael Savage and he was talking about how someone in the white house is brewing beer. Talked about it being served at the superbowl party and how they used honey from the grounds to make it. I don't think I missed anything to suggest he was being sarcastic or facetious. anyone else hear this?

What does he need to do about it? It's a state's decision to allow it or not. Go yell at your state's representatives. But good luck.

Exactly - the good people of Mississippi should rise up, organize and make their voices heard.

The problem is, the people of Mississippi probably have made their voices heard - against beer.

Since then prez Carter signed it into federal law April 6,1979...Shouldn't federal law supersede state law? Why would this instance be any different than other fed law changes?
But it is way cool that the President is validating our hobby by doing his own. With fresh honey from the kitchen garden no less. And then serving it at a state function. Even made his own label, cooler yet. I wonder whose software he used to create it? It's just cool to see that some part of him is still just wanting to be a guy. guys love beer. Guys love making beer even better. I wonder if he had a home brew whilst supervising his home brew batch?
I think the whole thing rocks! And then he gave the British Prime minister a bottle of Goose Island...hmmmm...I wonder if that had something to do with his AB stock...?...

States have their own liquor commissions. What Carter signed dealt with exempting certain amounts from taxation. States certainly have the right to limit production within their own state.
