Obama is a homebrewer

First, if you think the presidents 2 centuries ago were anywhere as busy as a president is today, you really need to go back to your history books, asap.

Second: that comparison is unfair, to say the least. Yeah, in the 18th century, everybody and their dog was a brewer. George Washington was also a moonshiner. But you can't compare those times with now.
There's been 20 presidents since 1900 (if we count W. McKinley, who left the office in 1901). How many of them have been home brewers?

Exactly. And that's the reason why the comparison isn't fair. For many reasons (and not only for the accumulation of power (that's a bit naive)), the workload of the president has increased dramatically, especially in the last80 or 90 years, and the circumstances have changed. In the times of Washington, not only it was common for people to make their own beer (BMC didn't exist, and neither did refrigeration, or pasteurization, among other things), but it was also common for them to do many other things, like their own soap, cheese, jams, etc, for 2 simple reasons: they had the timme, and they had the need.

I won't pardon you. I thank you. I wish everybody here had the good sense (and the respect for the OP, the forum owners/mods, and their fellow members, to do the same. This thread is a comment about Obama's homebrew, not about his presidency, and this forum is about homebrewing, not politics. The fact that some members here have chosen to repeatedly ignore other members' request to keep politics out of the forum, only speaks about them, not about the president.

My guess is that it was shortly after that meeting when he heard about homebrewing. I can just see some friend, staffer or supporter stalking the guy for months waiting for an opportunity to deliver the spiel that all of us have committed to memory: "You grow your own veggies and go to farmers markets but you drink that? George Washington/preservatives/yellow fizzy/here try this/lhbs/etc. etc. etc."

It wasn't me, so it must have been one of you.

The fact that he's not acting 'as' socialist to the degree as was expected, has no bearing on his ideology/world view... nor does it mean he is not acting in socialist ways..

It means, there is only so much the American People will put up with, and as such have neutered him to some degree, and that he has gotten into office and has decided it's a pretty cush lifestyle, and wants another term at it...

You can tell much more about a man by who his friends are, and who his enemies are, than you can by what he says, or what he does at any given snapshot period of his life....

Who he surrounds himself with, and who he turns to for advice tell the story...

Not drinking anything at the moment.. That's for later after the days 'to do list' has been first addressed...

Seriously, I would have one bearded "Master Brewer" and 10 skimpily cladded assistants. I would hand him 1 new recipe each day, and he would oversee the fields of grain, the hopyard, the brewery, the skimpily clad assistants, and the distillery. All for 250K or so a year.

I was wondering the same thing. Figured they have to doing extract or partial, unless the person actually brewing it has some brewing experience under their belt.

Talked about it being served at the superbowl party and how they used honey from the grounds to make it. Since then prez Carter signed it into federal law April 6,1979...Shouldn't federal law supersede state law? Why would this instance be any different than other fed law changes?
But it is way cool that the President is validating our hobby by doing his own. With fresh honey from the kitchen garden no less. And then serving it at a state function. Even made his own label,cooler yet. I wonder whose software he used to create it? It's just cool to see that some part of him is still just wanting to be a guy. guys love beer. Guys love making beer even better. I wonder if he had a home brew whilst supervising his home brew batch?

States have their own liquor commissions. What Carter signed dealt with exempting certain amounts from taxation. States certainly have the right to limit production within their own state.
