This thread just crashed and burned with political innuendos... Back on topic, it's ****ing awesome that someone brewed beer in the White House, regardless of the political party that the current occupant claims.

No really, politics aside it's a cool bit of validation to see homebrew in a setting like that.
 
The chefs probably are probably on this forum all the time..."researching" :D I mean where else would they learn everything they needed to know about homebrewing?? I bet they are making some halfway decent stuff by now, and that the fresh honey is goood!!

Political bickering aside, how cool is this? How you like to be the chef, too? It'd be nice to get paid handsomely to home brew for the president. Not that you'd be under any pressure to get it right, though.

I don't think it's all that "cool" to see it brewed in the White House. I mean, Homebrewing is not hard and it's getting pretty popular. This is no different than someone building a bowling alley in the whitehouse, or growing a garden out back.

I think the best thing we can get out of this is the ability to tell people, "Well, they homebrew beer at the White House..." when they give you "that look" after you tell them you brew beer. I mean, it gives a bit of credence to the hobby.

But honestly, it's not like OBAMA himself is brewing the beer.

Can you imagine Obama himself coming in here? "WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS BREW? OMG IS MY BEER INFECTED? WHY ARE THERE NO AIRLOCK BUBBLES!"

They also need to increase the limit we're allowed to brew (and make each state allow home brewing), and give everyone who does home brew free health insurance (and quality care) for as long as we home brew. :rockin: Give us discounts on apartment/home insurance too. :D They also need to subsidize us for every batch we brew. :D

Hey, if we're dreaming, might as well go for broke, right?
 
Cool to see this, but isn't it illegal for the chefs to be paid to brew beer for someone?

We should all send in resumes to be the white house brewer!

Well, D.C. isn't exactly a state, but I don't know what that means in terms of brewing laws.
 
I can imagine Barry Obams sitting outside one night drinking White House brew and smoking a cigarette.

I think it's pretty cool and it does help to have the White House supporting homebrewing. If something has alcohol, tobacco, or firearms involved, there is always a good chance some nut job lobbyist is going to try and take it down or tax it at some point.
 
...maybe we will see a change in White House staff soon with Charlie Papazian being appointed Secretary of State.

You know, I have to think that the kitchen crew would have done a little poking around on line as they went about this. Pretty hard not to land at HBT when one does.
 
Very cool story. I'm thinking the POTUS needs to talk to us about a Custom rig...

all electric with remote monitoring (I suggest BCS). I mean, if you need to fit in a brewday, it would be nice to start the system from AirForceOne...
 
So, the instructions that came with my kit say to leave it in primary for 5 - 7 days then rack to secondary. Does that sound right to you all?

But he's not the one actually doing the brewing, right? It's the kitchen staff members that are making the brew...

I do think that they need to establish a micro brewery on the grounds. Grow hops on site too.

I wasn't being literal. Trust me, I highly doubt the President is doing the brewing. I was serious about designing a brewrig for the White house though. That would be awesome.
 
Boerderij_Kabouter, A top notch brew rig would be needed, as you pointed out... With how most politicians drink, you'll probably need to fabricate at least a 100 barrel system, with several fermenters to keep them supplied. :D

Of course, since this IS the government footing the bill, you'll need to use those $2000 ball valves, and $5000 (each) welds. :D

Once the rig is done, I suspect you'll be retiring to an island you just purchased. :rockin:

It's an honor, Mr. President.

Yeast performs better at high temperatures, so you should ferment at at least 80 or 90 degrees. Light is healthy for all living things so you should also put the fermenter out in direct sunlight for most of the day. Secondaries are great. They help your beer clear and condition. Therefore, you should rack as many times as you can reasonably stand before bottling. And lastly, before bottling, be sure to shake the fermenter vigorously so that the yeast have plenty of oxygen to convert the priming sugar into CO2.

And for god's sake keep an eye on the bubbles in your airlock! If you don't see any, your beer is almost certainly infected. You will want to use a small amount of bleach to kill the bacteria so it is safe to drink.

Not to mention, triple racking is considered the norm... Don't worry about going grain to glass in a under 14 days. You also don't need hops in the beer, so if you forget them, that's ok.
 
My airlock stopped bubbling yesterday - does that mean the beer's ready? I called Rahm and he said he didn't have "any f*&$ng idea."
