I am preparing to brew a recipie that includes in the grain bill 1 LB or oats. Can I just toss them into the mash or do I need to cook them first?

If they are Quaker's Old Fashioned Oats, they must be cooked first. If they are "Quick Oats" or instant oats, no need to cook them. Oats from the LHBS are also pregelatinized, and don't need to be cooked.

Good info to know. I've only used flaked oats once and they were form LHBS. I figured they were same as quaker oats. Guess not. So the mash process doesn't cook them? Is it a temperature thing, like they need to be boiled?

Yes, they need to be "gelatinized" either by cooking (making oatmeal) or a cereal mash IF they are the regular Quaker oats.
