Brewing a partial mash Northern English Brown this weekend...

4lb Munton's Marris Otter malt
1lb Victory malt
1b Caramel 80L
0.25lb Munton's chocolate malt
3.3lb Briess Golden Light LME

60min 1oz Fuggles (4.8 AA)
10min 0.5oz Fuggles (4.8 AA)
0min 0.5oz Fuggles (4.8 AA)

Ringwood yeast at 66F

OG: 1.052
SRM: 20
IBU: 27

Any thoughts? I'm not sure about the late hop additions for the style. I typically shy away from citrusy late additions in darker beers but I'm curious to see if Fuggles will provide a more appropriate flavor for a brown ale.

Fuggles is a great choice, or east kent goldings would be another good choice.

The recipe looks good to me, but I've never used more than .5 pound of victory malt in a Northern English brown.

Thanks for the advice. I've actually never used Victory before so I'm not sure how it will turn out. Do you think 1lb is too nutty/biscuity for an NEB? Briess says up to 15% is good for browns. Maybe I should just call this a nut brown ale.

Well, a "nut brown ale" IS a "Northern English brown ale" anyway.

I don't have my own recipes in front of me, so I'm going by memory (I'm at my cottage) but it sure seems like the most victory I've used is .5 pound. But that doesn't mean it means that you have to!

You can probably sub NB's new Maris Otter syrup for the light extract. Might give you more of the English ale flavor you're after.

Ah, I see. I think I'll go ahead and do it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going completely overboard with the stuff.
