Trying to work out my next recipe as my Rakau/ Citra/ Nelson keg has just kicked. I want to definitely go with Rakau and Citra again but was a bit unhappy with the Nelson I got so would like to sub something else in. Have 24 Nectaron from Hop Alliance and 24 YVH Superdelic. @Dgallo do you think either of these hops would work with this combination? I'm thinking Nectaron should work instead of Nelson but would you use it in the 1:1:1 ratio as it’s really potent?you
You can’t go wrong with either. Superdelic is fantastic. I’ve used it my whirlpool and as my base hop. I’ve actually used all citra, rakau and Superdelic in a double ipa that turned out amazing.

Good to know this combo worked. What ratio did you use? Im thinking equal citra and Rakau and maybe just a bit less Superdelic as I found it having a bit of a kick to it.

I usually base my hop ratios according to what hop I want to shine and what hops will compliment that hop. I usually do 5 to 6 lbs/bbl . I would add Superdelic and citra in the whirlpool @ 2 lbs/bbl equal parts and dry hop @ 2:1:1 rakau:citra:Superdelic. Citra, Superdelic being my first dry hop and rakau my second. Cheers

Just brewed this recipe using Strata, El Dorado and Citra in 3:2:1 ratio for whirlpool and dry hop. Upped the flaked oats a bit. Still carbing in my kegerator but early sips/sniffs taste and smell out of this world. Dank, peachy/pineapple/mango, exploding out of the glass. Used Imperial A38 "Juice" yeast.

That sounds amazing, I just got some Strata I've been wanting to use. Did you pretty much brew the recipe as posted?

Strata is really catching my interest lately. Every beer I taste (commercial or homebrew) that includes Strata has really suited my palate. You get so much out of it - dank/cannabis, but also fruity. Just super versatile and plays well with others. I plan on brewing a modern WCIPA using Strata, Simcoe and Citra soon.

I actually prefer WCIPA, did you have a recipe yet?

I don't have anything set in stone, but targeting a more "modern" profile. Probably 60/35/5% Pilsner/American 2-row/carapils, mashed lower around 149-150, and will probably use a chico strain (WLP001?). Would target something in the 6.75% ABV range. Will use Strata, Simcoe and Citra (or Amarillo depending on what I have on hand) in near-equal amounts, try to hit 60 ish IBU with a big dry hop.

I'll shoot you a note if I land on a recipe that I like!

I don't want to derail this thread, but please do! I'm constantly looking to perfect my WCIPA.

Anybody ever do a return or exchange through Michigan hop alliance? Their return policy seems pretty terrible but I reached out to support about it. Ordered about 7 lbs of hops and only about 4 seem usable from my last order

Thanks for that information. Building up my starter at the moment but need to do a stepped starter so wont get to brew this weekend but will the following one.

That disappointing to hear. I thought they were supposed to be one of the better hop suppliers for homebrewers. Which varieties did you order that were a bust?

I've had varying success with MHA and YVH it's kinda a crapshoot getting good hops from any of the homebrew suppliers tbh. Got bad 24 nelson riwaka and one of their Michigan hops were as hard as rocks

Edit: They just refunded me for the hops that were lackluster without issue

Depends on the hop type too. Super hard to get good mosaic from anywhere. Both HA and YVH were straight onions for me. I've had better luck with the HA stuff they source through YCH (their citra and simcoe have been good + all of the cryos they have are amazing).

Double brewday today. All nelson single neipa used about 1oz/gal of Nelson CGX hot side, going to hit it with a 50/50 mix of '23 and '24 Freestyle Nelson in the DH at about 3oz/gal. Other one was a root and branch inspired "multi oat/multi wheat" NE TIPA, wp with Citra Lupomax and HA Motueka - going to dry hop at 4oz/gal with Citra/Freestyle Motueka/Strata CGX.

I agree with you 100% and they provide lot # 🍻
Lot numbers are great, but I've only found YCH's lot lookup tool, and it's great. HA has a handful of hops they source from YCH, but there are so many more hops coming from other places, their lot numbers don't mean much unless there's a way to look up all the sensory info like you're able to with YCH sourced hops.

Here's my latest that the grain bill had to be stitched up with what I had on hand vs. what I thought I had 😂

I used whatever left over malted white wheat, but it may have been unmalted white wheat and I missed my pre-boil gravity by 9 points. Had to supplement it with 1lb of sugar. Fermented a bit lower so it was 1% higher in ABV than planned. Mosaic and Azaaca in the WP with Mosaic, Azaaca in the dry hop with Citra Lupomax in the keg.

Just tapped it - initially had some hop burn being 3 days in the keg, but it was getting smoother as the pours went on.

Anyone ever use any of the Michigan grown hops from MHA for a hazy? Bought three different varieties over the years and I don't think a single one really stood out to me.

I've used Bergamot about two years ago, and never got the "orange to the max" aroma or flavor. I just got earthy. Tossed them in the trash and dumped the beer down the drain. Lesson learned.

Is this the biggest thread of HBT? Insanely cool to be a part of this movement with you, lads. It's a great beer style and you just keep making it better!
500 pages, awesome isn't it? I've learned a lot from this thread, I'm actually brewing one today.

That sucks to hear. I just filled up the chest freezer with a bunch of MHA 24 Nelson and others.

I actually just brewed with Citra Cryo, Nelson and Strata from them the other day. All smelled and looked fine on brew day. I decided to give them a go because the Citra, Mosaic, and even Nelson I'd been getting from YVH were really garlic/oniony/footy. Will see how it turns out. I've got a bunch more I haven't opened yet but didn't have any hop bricks so far.

The nelson I got was more grassy and woody then I would have liked so I ended up going super low on it for the beer I was just dry hopping. The Galaxy I got though smelled really good though

I wouldn't be at the stage I am with this style if it wasn't for this thread. The amount of information I've picked up from really talented brewer's. Here's to the next 500 pages.

I brewed a few weeks ago with the 24 Nelson from Hop Alliance and it was just ok. Smelled great when I opened the pack but the flavour didn't transfer to the beer. Was a lot better than the 23 Nelson from YVK which was very vegetal and woody.

Kegged my newest hazy Saturday. Only had verdant and less than a month to get it ready for a comp so I had to go with it. Finished right at 8%. Still a fair amount of hop burn really hoping it balances out by sat for this event. Everything else about it seems good so far though I'll post a picture later in the week when I pull a pint for tasting. Ended up going mostly citra citra cryo and a little nelson and Galaxy. I wasn't super in love with the nelson I had but the Galaxy smelled really good
