I was having this discussion with the local brewery. When they buy bottles, some types are rated as "refillable" and some aren't. Presumably the refillable ones cost more for them to buy new.
For me harvesting used bottles from the recycling center, I just stick to those brands of bottle that are refillable. You can feel the difference in weight / quality and when it comes down to it I feel safer with hefes / Belgians with these bottles, and have more of a buffer in case I get an infection or don't prime properly.

Also some bottles are embossed with different patterns in the glass. The local brew comps won't accept these bottles, which can only be due to problems in the past. They list a couple of brands by name and your entry is voided if you use these.
