I haven't seen refillable bottles for a long time, but I remember they were much heavier than other bottles. If I had to guess, refillable bottles were thicker and made to take the abuse of multiple fillings.

Yea, the ones I have been using are 500ml and range from 260 something grams to maybe a bit more... but I guess I am looking for a more technical answer...perhaps there is a standard (ISO, JIS, DIN) that is used to define the different bottle grades?

I was having this discussion with the local brewery. When they buy bottles, some types are rated as "refillable" and some aren't. Presumably the refillable ones cost more for them to buy new.

For me harvesting used bottles from the recycling center, I just stick to those brands of bottle that are refillable. You can feel the difference in weight / quality and when it comes down to it I feel safer with hefes / Belgians with these bottles, and have more of a buffer in case I get an infection or don't prime properly.

Also some bottles are embossed with different patterns in the glass. The local brew comps won't accept these bottles, which can only be due to problems in the past. They list a couple of brands by name and your entry is voided if you use these.

Its OK. I just noticed I was getting lax and started keeping various bottle types around and had begun using them for test brews... not my more "established" beers; but then I realised they were working ok... suddenly, One Day, I began using vinegar bottles which have a beer (crown cap) head on them, to bottle raspberry syrup, and one broke during capping... causing me to lose much dear exlir and That started me rethinking the path i was on.... If I could locate a bottle manufucterer perhaps I could get the details from them.
