Stepped up and bought a stir plate and Erlenmeyer flask yesterday to make a starter for today's brew day. Three questions about the setup:

1) Any way to quietthe thing down when it is stirring? My son's first comment to me this morning after he woke up was "What is that thing in the kitchen making all the noise? It's annoying!"

2) Is it safe to boil the stir bar in the starter on the stove?

3) Finally, how the heck do you keep the flask from turning into a wort volcano on the stove? I used to boil in a pan and transfer to a gallon jug. Part of the reason I switched was so that I could use just one vessel.
