Does it even really provide a purpose? Would loose tinfoil be ok? I suppose the best bet (other than go get one) would be grab one off a tripel thats been in secondary for 5 weeks and put tinfoil on that one?

the cap is used to keep the solution in the air lock, a vigorous fermentation can blow it out in a short time.

IMO the cap is there just to keep bugs out better as a vigorous fermentation will easily just low the water or solution right by the cap.

I use the bungs with airlock and blow off tube...blow off tube handles almost all the activity...tin foil will be fine i'm sure.
