Well I did it! Got a starter equipment kit and ingredient kit from my LHBS and gave it a whirl. I made a couple of mistakes (put in bittering hops before the hot break) but have a good feeling about it. SG was dead on to the kits instructions! here's to hoping the batch works out!

There isn't anything wrong with putting the hops in early. Search the forum for "first wort hops" and see what other people do. The only downside I see is that the hot break material will want to boil over on its own and the hops just make it a little worse. Stirring or spraying the surface will help that as will something like fermcap.
 
Sketerbuck you are dead on. This first batch is an English brown. Thinking at getting the chocolate raspberry stout from Austin next.
