I am about to begin brewing and while gathering equipment I remembered seeing some bottles in a 100 year old falling down log cabin on my property. I went to check them out and found several hundred quart, 28 ounce and 1 liter bottles suitable for crown caps. Many of the 28 ounce bottles are Vess Cola bottles and made of heavy glass. The cabin was last occupied in the 1930's, the bottles are probably from the 1950's. Are these suitable for bottling beer once I sterilize them? My aging will be done in a cool dark basement. Attached is a photo of some bottles.

I was told by the local brew shop that as long as they were able to come clean, and the beer was aged with no light sources, you could use clear glass. I would say you scored big time. It has taken me a long time to collect over 100 grolsch bottles. I don't drink champagne or grolsch.

In addition to the large bottles there are hundreds of antique returnable beer bottles. Somebody around here must have been a serious home brewer in the old days.
