I made a yeast starter last night, but perhaps did something wrong in cleaning/sanitizing (maybe missed cleaning something in my growler?) because this morning I notice a little black speck in the wort. See attached for a picture (it's the fuzzy spot in the middle I'm worried about). Anyway, I don't like the look of it so I'm thinking of just getting new yeast (better than wasting the batch) and finally getting a 2000ml flask for starters. But if you think I should go ahead let me know.

On another topic, I am using iodophor for sanitizing, and it mentions the water needing to be amber to be effective--once i put in the recommended amount for 12.5 ppm and it mixes in, I barely detect any amber color at all (didn't see any until I put a glass of water next to it, and maybe it looked slightly tinged). The amber color was not noticeable at all. Is this normal?

it's hard to say what that is, but it doesn't look like mold or anything, so you should be OK, but if it worries you, use new yeast. can't help you with the iodophor, but if you're mixing it how they instructed you to, then i'm sure it's doing it's job.

It looks fine to me, go make some beer! Upgrading to a flask is a good idea anyway since you can boil in the vessel and take care of sanitation easier.

Not sure about the iodophor.
