Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I just made a yeast starter with Wyeast 3726. I had another yeast I the erlenmeyer flask, so I put that yeast in a container, rinsed yhe flask, filled it with boiling water and sterilizer (sodium precarbonate) left it there for 10 minutes, and rinsed it with tap water. Then i boiled the wort in a pot on the stove for 10 minutes, cooled the wort down on an icebath, sanitized the scissor, funnel, aluminium foil and yeast package and dumped the yeast on the flask.
But I forgot to sterilize the flask before put the wort in it. Do you think it should be alright or I have an infected yeast?

If it works out, you should do five joyful mysteries in thanksgiving. And there's always the sorrowful mysteries if it gets contaminated.

What was the other yeast? Archaebacteria?

Most probably don't know the difference between sanitize and sterilize.

Out of curiosity, how would you have sterilized the flask?

I'm positive you'll be fine. That's more work than I normally put into it, and haven't ever had an issue.

I've had bad batches mind you but never for something like this.

I'm thinking you'll be OK, but don't do the tap water rinse next time. After boiling water in the flask, dump it out and put a piece of sanitized aluminum foil over the mouth. You don't need the percarbonate, just the boiling water will sanitize your flask. Then pour in your wort, pitch yeast at the precribed temp.

Fair enough...Haha Nah the other Yeast Was Wyeast Denny 's Favourite.

I would fill the flask with a solution of water and StellarSan to sterilize it as i always do (apart this time...)

Oh that's really reassuring mate, thanks!! I ll check the yeast on the fridge, let it settle and then I ll freeze it, like the other one on my yeast bank

Thanks for that mate!! Next time I ll try with just boiling water then, it saves me the precarbonate and StarSan!

(Sodium) Percarbonate is an alkaline cleanser. It's similar to good old washing soda (Sodium Carbonate) but with a loosely bound oxygen molecule, that gets released upon dissolving. The oxygen can help with sanitizing, but it's not spectacular (it's just looks good on TV).

Now Starsan and Iodophor are (real) sanitizers. But they can't work unless the surface you're treating is already clean.

Clean first, rinse with potable (drinking) water to remove the (alkaline) cleanser, then sanitize with a real sanitizer.

Thanks mate!

Yeah that's exactly what I always do when clean my erlenmeyer flask, but this time I forgot to add the sanitizer after the cleaning and rinsing the sterilizer. So I got really worried about yeast contamination but as many have said she should be alright 👍. When I ll brew with it, I ll keep you posted
