My brain has yet to wrap itself around that many IBU's... I was like "C'mon man, you can only perceive up to 100 anyway! What's a few more here and there?", and my brain was all like "Shut up, foo! I can't handle it!"

Good job man, I hope it works out nicely for ya.

Ize

And add this stupid Virginia humidity and it was worse. :cross:

Uhm, Dude, did I read the IBUs on the Pliny recipe right? Did that say, like, 278?

My God, you really DID brew something completely bat-sh*t insane. Glad I could help.

:D

Don't get me wrong, the beer is VERY bitter. But the flavor that comes through with all of those hops is nothing short of spectacular. That turned out to be a great beer. It made me rethink some recipes actually. Lots of hop addditions, especially near the end of the boil is the way to go, IMHO.

Give me some basis for comparison. The hoppiest beer I've ever had was Hop Rod Rye; anyone have any sense what the IBUs are on that?

I believe that is in the 90s. Honestly, the PTB cloner isn't much worse than that as far as percieved bitterness, but the hop flavor really makes it a completely different animal.

I'm not too sure about this but I think Dude might be a hop head. :D

When I hit the wall and was so sick of brewing that I thought I would go postal if I smelled another over hopped ale I did the only logical thing I could think of - I built a still! Of course this is illegal and I am only speaking metaforically. But it was a great theoretic way to deal with my burnout!

What's Arrogant Bastards at? They say classified, but someone has to know...

I'd bet it is right around the 100 mark. Possibly a bit lower because I find it as a harsher bitterness than Hop Rod Rye, which suggests to me a higher cohumulone hop (and not necessarily MORE hops) is used, like Chinook. Higher cohumulone can give it a harsher bitterness, and the perception of IBUs may be skewed. IMHO. ;)

I always figured they over-did the bitter additions to the boil to get it that harsh. Not a fan of it personally, other than the bottle. Guess I'm not worthy.

I have been on burn out for awile now. It's been since October 05 since I brewed a batch. I felt tired of drinking the same old styles all of the time. I think my comeback batch will be a cider and follow it up with something experimental. I am going to try to produce a caramel porter with a strong presence of caramel flavor (almost like dessert). I hope to use an extract flavoring for this. I was always fond of Saranac's Caramel Porter.

I was brewing the other day in 104+ heat and would put the spray nozz;e on "mist" and hose me self down every 30 minutes. I'd brew at night if the jet burners weren't so loud.

You could also hold a huge party and once you have NO beer left to drink other than store bought, it's amazing how motivated you can become. :)

LOL....I brewed...another Pliny the Bastid.

Boy, it sure would be cool if that stuff was bottled before Sept 10th. *cough cough* :D You all really wouldn't believe this beer. Yes, it's damned hoppy, but it's not stupid bitter. It is all about the hops, but some thought was actually put into the blend. It's incredible. Dude......ditto on the late boil additions. Of course we discussed this before (re: Pride and Joy).

Back on topic, I'm on a hiatus myself. I'm moving soon, so I don't have time to finish anything out. When I finally get moved, it's just going to be and my son, so time will be tight. I'm really wanting to put together a little slicker system so brewday is shorter and a little easier, but I don't have the time or money to do it. So, I'm kinda stuck at the moment. I'm still very much a homebrewer, though, and always have ideas running through my head. I shall return. ;)

So, while a streak is cool, don't burn yourself out. A break won't make you less of a brewer.

Oh yeah, that's the goal. Save your bombers. :D

Besides. its the least I can do--for all the good times and great brews we've done. Oh yeah, and I used some of the "SwAMi Brewery" donor hops. :)
