I am looking to either brew a lager or an ipa with around 7% alcohol. I have only brewed a pale ale, stout and a Hefeweizen. I really enjoy ipa's and lags so I'm interested in brewing one. I usually do extracts seeing as I only have a 4 gallon pot a d 5 gallon Carboys at the moment. Any personal advice would be awesome, I'm in Portland Oregon if that helps anyone with my usual take in beers ( seeing as I love all the micro's we enjoy here)
Thanks!

Do you have the setup available to temp control for lagering? if not, then it seems out of the two listed the ipa would be your boy. You could try a black ipa or a rye ipa if you wanted some flair.

Choose something that would be well suited for the upcoming warm weather, something lighter and refreshing

+1 on the lager controlling, you need to be able to ferment at lower temperatures for lagers. The other option is a hybrid like a Kolsch or a California Common which uses a lager yeast but acts more like an ale with temps, etc.

Use an ale yeast. In the PNW right now you will naturally be fermenting in the 60-70F range. Find a way to measure your temps and cover your carboys with grocery bags to keep some heat and to block the light.

Ya I ferment in the basement of my house. Right now it is between 58-62 degrees. I prefer darker beers. I guess due to spring I may want to stick to an ipa, just not sure what kind to make

I would suggest using a 90 minuet boils on some of the hops, then doing a 15 minuet boiled on some Amarillo hops...I may or may not love dogfish head. Lol for a good summer I'd go with a light IPA. Look up a 60 minuet IPA clone, or I enjoy a good saint Arnold lawn mower. That's a good one. Its just a pale ale.

If you are open to suggestions for spring beer, a late hop pale could be really fun. not much bittering, lots of late addition/dry hopping. just a thought. If you like dark beers a brown could be good too, or something like a dunkel.

How about a Black IPA or India Brown Ale then?
