so i'm on major budget and didn't want to spend ten bucks for a batch of yeast. last brew i made used Saffbrew Abbeye yeast...

... i took the Lees from three of my beers, and put them in a glass jar with some corn syrup water. within a few hours i saw bubbles, left it overnight

... pitched it into beer last night and it's boiling over with life this morning ! most vigorous i've ever seen.

thanks guys for all the advice and tips. i wonder how long i can keep this yeast strain going.

For future reference. No need for the corn syrup. It is not a good idea.

Just pour the yeast cake in to sanitized jars and loosely cap them. Label and put them in the fridge. Use as needed.

Feeding yeast simple sugars is not good as when they ferment beer they will be eating maltose and maltriose. By giving them simpler sugars you are training them to metabolism something different.

I'm no expert on the microbiology but I think it is to do with different genes and enzymes get switched on if the yeast are fed simple sugars.

I harvest yeast often. It's a great way to build up a bank of yeast strains for future brews.
