Hey Y'all!

I'm 24 and from Wisconsin. My girlfriend and I have started our very first batch of mead, which we made roughly 20 minutes ago in 2 half-gallon mason jars. For our first batch, we used a blueberry mead recipe that was found on the forums. The other one was just a basic mead recipe we found online.

We are looking forward to our first taste in 3-4 weeks.

Welcome to the forum from your neighboring state to the south!

My wife forced me into beer brewing. The things I'll do to make her happy. 🤣

There's a lot of great info here (my wife makes mead, too) and I'm sure you'll learn a lot!

My mead isn't very impressive until about a year old. I always try it young and then put it into the cabinet until I find it again later. A smart man would start more right away. When you find it again it will be gone too fast.

Welcome to the group!

I live in Wisconsin. My girlfriend got me into brewing beer too but that was needed to forget her. I have moved on and enjoy this hobby and all of the other folks who are hooked

Again, Welcome!!

This is a ton of required reading. If it's necessary I'll be sure to write it down and figure it out.

Welcome... for a quick and dirty, dead-easy, sweet mead that breaks all the rules of mead making but results in something enjoyable in about 2 months, look for the JAOM (Joe's Ancient Orange Mead) recipe... If you want to be more precise in your nutrient protocol look for the BOMM (Bray's One Month Mead)...

you're aleady on your way down the rabbit hole 😜

I've got some Joe's that's well over five years old, very tasty!

ok so... both from Wisconsin. BP's current girlfriend got him into brewing. Oak's ex girlfriend got him into brewing..
There can only be one unattached gal in Wisconsin that specifically awesome, right?

My Girlfriend and I spent 7-8 Hours on Sunday, brewing 12 half-gallons of mead in multiple different flavors!

[hide=Jars of Mead]

[/hide]

Labeled with the Date and Number. 1-12 Right to Left.

We have 2 Blueberries (Jars 1 and 2)
3 Cherries (Jars 3, 4, and 7)
4 Apples (Jars 5, 6, 8, and 9)
1 Regular base Mead (Jar 10)
2 Grape Wines (Jars 11 and 12)

Initially, we saw no signs of fermentation, so we became increasingly disheartened. However, this morning, all 12 jars showed signs of vigorous fermentation! Our airlocks are working correctly and releasing the excess CO2 that's created. We will be adding more Nutrients today, tomorrow, and the next day until. In 3-4 Weeks, these should be ready to taste test.

If there's anyother information I should now please let me know!

While my wife did not "start" me on brewing she has been very supportive of it. She nor my daughter drink beer and I have not found a brew that my son will admit to enjoying, but I am working on that. The kids bought me my first starter kit I think because dad is much easier to deal with after a few beers, and wife agrees. LOL. But, evertime I inquire about a new piece of equipment for my hobby she very rarely flat out says no. It is mostly that I have to explain what it does and why I need it. If my reasoning is justified, then she releases the funds and away we go. LOL.

That joint bank account controlled by the wife lasted about a year with us. I put my check in every week and she paid the bills and I never had a clue if I had any money to spend or not. I set up my own bank account (which she can access - its about options and control, not hiding anything) and we divvied up the bills. She pays her bills the day they hit the mailbox (or email now). It's an OCD thing. I set mine up online to pay the day they are due. We flip money between accounts if we owe the other for something. Never had another money argument after that and as long as my bills are paid, that new brew gadget is mine.

I agonize over every brewery purchase and my wife normally says, if you want it, buy it. She's still the voice of reason.

I hesitate because I figure I can get by with my old equipment. That's me from when I had very little money. Now it's much better but I still scrutinize my purchases.

We're not much different are we?

Seems pretty spot on I would say. LOL

My wife got me into brewing also, now she's trying to get me to start at our "vacation house".
Mead is great, but I agree with letting it age. I make a 10 gallon batch every 10 years, since 1996, next year I'll do it again, probably for the last time. I'm the only one who drinks mead so it lasts a while.
