So....brewing my first big beer this coming Sunday but only have Growlers for doing my starter(my first starter at that). I started it yesterday afternoon with a 100gram DME/1L starter. Using this calculator http://www.brewersfriend.com/yeast-pitch-rate-and-starter-calculator/, it looks like using 1 growler, I'm not going to be able to up the cell count I need in that small of a container. Can I split the yeast I have tomorrow and do (2) separate starters to help grow things a little faster?

My plan would be to cold crash starting tomorrow morning. Tomorrow night I would decant and make up a 4L wort. I'd use 2L of the wort to mix to thin down the yeast slurry so I can split it between 2 growlers. Then I could top off each growler so I have a 1.5L starter for each.

Thoughts?

I've had a few beers so I didn't pay attention to your specific volumes, however your approach is sound. You can also decant and step it up in the 1L growler, however that may not give you enough yeast depending on your starting gravity. The yeast calculator is your best friend so as long as you are calculating half the yeast per growler and the new wort and get near your anticipated pitching rate your should be good.

For a big beer don't forget to aerate well when you pitch into the wort after you brew and if you have yeast nutrient that is also good to use.
