My first labels: Trying different looks.

Aloha,
First three batches brewed after 20 years hiatus. Holy smokes, got back into it and was blown by how far these thing has come. Anyway, got back into brewing as living on a Rock in the middle of the Pacific, especially in Hilo, makes it hard pressed to get good brew varieties. These are from my first three batches. Critic away!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first one. Absolutely.

The second one has a weaker composition and the background is confusing. The ribbon is also obviously distorted

The third one, well... It reminds me of a scrapbook page gone wrong. No offense there, it just lacks composition and clarity, especially with all the text.

The first one though has nice colors, a good composition, is easily readable and obviously more polished.

These three labels were not meant to be consitent or have a series look.
I tried three different looks, playing with different concepts.
You got it spot on as to what I was trying to convey.
The first one I was going for the typical contemporary/commercial look.
The second one also, just lot a resolution in bewtween saving it from one program to another.
The third one, LOL!, I was going for the disorganized, bright, "gettho" look. Trying to match the design to the words and title, unglorifying the beer in sorts.
These labels are a coming out of sorts for me, as I have not done any designing in a couple years. Also I'm not really familiar with the programs I was using, Photoshop Elements and Print Shop.
I wanted to just put something out there from the top of my head, to get my creative juice back flowing, thus they were all pretty much unrefined, one shot deals. Main thing is I had fun with it, and I will be refining as I get a little more serious, although I do like to keep it fun and tongue in cheeky.
Again, thanks for the input as it gives me ideas on where to inprove and also reinforces my concepts on what I wanted to convey.

One of the biggest things for me is simply giving the text their own clearance.

There isn't anything wrong with the colors, rotating, etc on the last one. It's just that they are close together and loud. They are all competing for attention against each other. The fact that the background has so much contrast makes that amplified. I would give them a heirarchy.

Make the most important thing significantly bigger or bolder than everything else. make the second most important smaller or less bold enough to stand out from the main part. Do this all the way down until you have about 3-4 levels of text with their own distinctions.

I think the 3rd one would work well if you made them bumper stickers instead of quotes...

Um, not to pick nits, but shouldn't there be a toad on the label(s) seeing as how it's Evil Toad brewery? Just a thought. Regards, GF.

I think basically you lick the evil toad and then everything starts to look like the third label.

LOL! at Burgs. That was funny. Maybe I should print out labels with some Toad extract in the ink and have a "Lick here before drinking" on it.:fro:
On the Evil Toad logo, working on it. Please understand that those labels were made one shot deal, just put together without any real refinement. Yeah, been tossing back and forth on how the Evil Toad logo would look like. There's a back story on the evolution of the name Evil toad bythe way. I'm saving it for whne I get the logo finalized.
