I've tried to start growing chinook and cascade in central Florida. I know it is possible to at least grow cascade as far as south Florida. Iv'e been hitting a brick wall. My cascade gets about 1/2" from a rhizome and dies. The chinook gets about 1 1/2" and shrivels at the base and dies. The leaves do not shrivel first so I'm thinking they are not flagging or out of water. The soil is drying around so I know it is not fungus. My only though is it just is to late for a new plant to start due to the heat. The only book I have read says it is best to plant in february and this is in Oregon. Thank you the for help in advance.

Are you keeping them moist? They will shrivel if left in dry soil in hot weather especially if you have sandy soil. Also thoroughly water the area when you irrigate not just right at the rhizome. I would recommend that you grow them in potting soil or vermiculite in a small pot until they are little plants. I have nicely developing plants and it was 101 and dry yesterday here. I'm watering every day when it's above 90.
Ive tried watering every day and even tried twice a day. I think my best bet is to grow them in the pot like you suggest. When it starts to get cooler out and back in the 80's I will move them outside.

I have mine in pots with what ever the garden store had on sale as soil. They are all going absolutely nuts. It's been raining a lot up here and it doesn't seem to bother them a bit. I realize that fungus can be an issue, but I'd poor the water to them and keep them in fertilized soil. Once they get going re-plant them in the "real dirt".

I'm in central Fl. Potted to Cascade in early April and have been watching them close. Doing very well and I'm surprised at the rate of growth. They seem happy for now.

If you go to Lowe's, HD, Walmart, etc in Central Florida, they have their plants outside under a roof made of black screen like material. That way the rain gets in and they still get sun but it's not the harsh, direct sun. I wonder if you made a "green house" from window screening and say pressure treated wood or PVC if that would work. Might be worth a try.

Well I think I've definitely found the place to buy hops. This is a picture of the Chinook I just got today. The root ball was around 4"x6"! Cost $20.74 delivered from Dutch Touch Brewers Inc on ebay. Looks like Northern brewer uses them for their rhizomes.
I did some more research on the lower pinching before death. Two possibles are pH and or poor root structure. With this new plant poor root structure will be out. pH test I will do tomorrow.
