My 1st recipe is in the fermentor as we speak. I wanted to post it to see if anyone has done anything similar and to let me know how it came out.

I was shooting for an Amber Ale of sorts:

1/2lb. Carapils Barley
6.6lbs of Northwestern Amber Malt
Bittering Hops - 1oz. Cascade / 1oz. Galena
Finishing Hops - 1oz. Cascade
1 pack of Wyeast Activator pitchable Northwest Ale yeast

I pulled a sample just before pitching the yeast to check with the hydrometer I received a reading of 1.045 @ 81 degrees F. Does this sound right? I think I was reading the hydrometer correctly but not 100% sure. Thanks.

at 81*F, your temp corrected reading would be ~1.048....seems about right

that recipe looks like a winner. I'll bet its going to be a fantastic amber ale. make sure to let us know how it turns out.

Good to hear, I cant wait. I punched the recipe into the Beer Calculus at hopville.com and it said it may be a bit on the sweet/malty side which I am ok with but I do want a nice balance also with the hops. My ABV is looking to be around 4.5% if the chart is correct and the OG seemed to be pretty close to the measurement I took.

Sure. Feel free to post recipes before you brew them, as twelve people on here are likely to give you fifteen opinions. At least you'll learn something and may avoid things you want to avoid.

Looks like it will be a fine beer.

Good deal I cant wait to taste test!

Quick question: Anyone ever have a VERY slight leak around the spigot area while fermenting? The leak was just one drip of what looked like sticky malt and since then has not dripped one bit, I'm just curious if this is due to slight buildup of pressure from the C02 being produced?
