Note: According to this tree, WLP838 is most closely related to Safale 04. Wow!
I've made very good "lagers" with S-04. Way way better than Lutra kveik, BTW.

If everything else is pointing towards 838 being a lager yeast, then you need more evidence than just one sequence to say that it's not.
Some people like to hate on S-04. But I for one find it to be very clean and lager-like. Even sulfury. Almost like it's a lager yeast, even though it's not. Maybe WLP838 is something more like that.

I can confirm that.
 
My first Munich Helles I made with WLP838 and it game out good.
I have scored some WLP860 and I plan to use that for the next one - anyone have experience with that.

I'd also like to save the yeast from that batch and make a second beer using it. Any suggestions?
