hi all,

my recipe have a OG of 1.052 and im using the california lager yeast 2112.

mr malty asked me for a 5.5l starter, is this coyou know ect? i selected hybrid as the yeast kind, please coment if you know something abougt wyeast 212.4

What kind of starter are you doing? The program is set for 'simple starter' that is merely a starter that sits on the counter. If you have a stir plate, make sure to select that option because for a 5 gallon batch it told me no more than 2L. How old is your yeast? That can play a huge role as well.

I would check to see if you have 'simple starter' or 'stir plate' selected first. I used to make this mistake and realized it the day after I purchased a 5L flask.

i dont have a stir plate and my yeast viabilit is on the 87%, but i do hake it every now and then.
 
There is an option for intermittent shaking. If you use the intermittent shaking option, with hybrid, 1.052, 87% viability and anything under 5.38 gal you will only need one vial/smack pack and a 2.5L starter. Use that pull down menu for the kind of starter you are using.

If you are making true lager of 1.052 OG and 5 gallons in the fermentor, intermittent shaking method for the starter, BF has a step one starter of 1 liter, and step 2 starter of 2 liters for an end cell count of 385 billion cells, for a target pitch rate of 365 billion cells.

To get a large number of cells with out a stir plate, it is often easier to do stepped starters, to keep the starter volumes lower, to be more manageable.
 
Do yourself a favor and build a stir plate. It's one of the cheapest DIY jobs in Homebrewing.

You need a computer fan ($6), a cigar box (free-$3), a steal washer about the size of a nickle ($.25), and a power supply--an old cell charger will work, but $12 otherwise, 6V is probably right--and a hard drive magnet, or good neodymium magnet ($9, with shipping, but you may find a local store and get one for $2). You glue the washer right on the center of the fan, then you can adjust the magnet so it's properly centered. Oh, get a well reveiwed 25mm or 1" stir bar from your LBHS or online: don't buy something that doesn't have homebrewers reviews becase many larger bars are not meant for high RPM and will throw. I canibalized most of my parts and spent less than $15 making mine.

Plus, it's fun to build things!
 
thank you all for your anwsers, i real;y apreciate it.
i did a 2 l starter, and im going to do another 1.5 l, my next question is, when pouring the starter to my beer, if i only use the yeast that droped from suspenion, that white slurry on the bottom and discart the rest of the liquid, will i loose most of my yeast??
 
Refrigerate the starter until the spent wort layer is clear. All of the yeast will have dropped out of suspension.
