Which do you prefer for mounting your element to your keg? 1" NPT half coupling or 1" NPS nut?
 
I prefer using NPS nuts. It's cleaner and nothing hanging in or out of the kettle. You just have to make sure you always have a few extra gaskets on hand.

So did you weld the nut on then drill out the center? It looks that way in the first pic.

No...I just punched out the whole and welded the nut to the kettle. Then I welded the inside. A food safe weld has to be completely sealed so that nothing gets in between the kettle and the weld. If that happened it could become contaminated.
