i mowed the lawn tonight shirtless. i have a pond in my backyard. sometimes it sucks, and tonight, wasnt all that bad. we have tons of bats, which help a ton. but, i did get a couple bites on my shoulders and neck, which are no fun..

Fruit flies are attracted to vinegar... hopefully that's not what your brewin'

Well, I try not to the fruit flies seem to like beer around here homebrew or otherwise. Really can't fault them for that I guess.

I had to come inside before I caught malaria.

There is virtually no mosquitos here in El Paso, I just came in from the backyard. I was having a smoke out there shirtless, and no bites. It has been bone dry here in EL Paso, just this week we got some rain but not much.

I hate those damn things to.

Gainesville, FL is infested with them. Especially with the pond in our backyard. Haven't even seen one in the two months we have been here in Cave Creek, AZ.

Well, I try not to the fruit flies seem to like beer around here homebrew or otherwise. Really can't fault them for that I guess.

It was really still last night- that's probably why they were so bad. Bob and I have lots of bites on us, even though we came in at dark.

When my nephew went home to Ohio, he was an expert at the "Michigan Wave"!

I'm not complaining. We have enough wet areas. SO I'm very surprised that there aren't a bunch of them this year.

I was just saying to SWMBO the other night that it was nice to not be attacked by swarms of them. Back in NY, you couldn't go out past dusk. Here, there are some but not nearly as bad. We have a large bat population so I'm sure that helps. Our subdivision is pretty wooded and at leas a third of my backyard is wooded. Back home we would be covered in bites constantly.

This year's way worse than last year in Central Joisey. We had a party last Saturday and went through 2 bottles of deet and still had bites.

Has anyone had any luck with vitamin B12? I heard that if you take that stuff they wont touch you, but it could be a myth. As far as parties go, the best remedy I've found for the parties on the deck on those hot summer nights is I have a couple big shop fans I run on the sides of the deck. The skeeters either wont or can't fly through the draft, and nobody gets bitten

We're debating nuking our yard with a mosquito bomb. I've heard it's very much a localized pest. They only come from around 5-10 feet to bite you, you're not getting bit by your neighbor's mosquitos. We are planning on having a big dinner party but if you step outside into the yard you'll have a swarm around you.

It was pretty dry here in northern Illinois until the third week of July...and then The Flood began! Ended up the wettest July on record...and now we're paying for it with mosquitos! I mowed the lawn this morning...and just about got eaten alive! I'll just have to use more of that lovely summer cologne...OFF!

Power is cheaper here too. My Gainesville power bill ran $250 in the summer. Most expensive here so far was $175.00. Same square footage.

I would say...

1. Friendlier people
2. Better food
3. More outdoors stuff to do (assuming you're a morning person lol)
4. Cheaper food and gas
5. No skeeters.

Not true, we routinely have issues with a neighbaor who refuses to either maintain or demolish an inground pool. At least once a season he lets it go and it become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The flight range for females is usually longer than that of males. Many times wind is a factor in the dispersal or migration of mosquitoes. Most mosquitoes stay within a mile or two of their source. However, some have been recorded as far as 75 miles from their breeding source."

Yes, it does work - for a while. I used to live in a mosquito hell called Mc Intosh, FL. Don't know why, but the mosquitos were far worse than anywhere else I've ever seen. Just going through the door at night would let about fifty (no exargeration) of them in. You could coat yourself in DEET and not get bit that much but just the "pressure" of thousands of them bumping into you and getting in your ears would drive you nuts. I tried hitting the yard to stop them. I would mix insecticide at double recommended doses and bomb the yard (half acre lot). It would knock them back to where the yard was habitable after dark. This would hold for the day I sprayed and the following day but by the third night they were coming back with a vengance. It just wasn't worth it. I would have to turn my yard into a toxic wasteland to keep them at bay. But if you are planning a yard party, hit the area hard the evening before - it will help greatly. Make sure to spray up and under plants and bushes - you want to get the underside of the leaves where mosquitos hide. Also, add a drop or two of liquid soap when mixing the batch. It helps the insecticide stick and remain longer on leaves. Good luck.

Whenever I use the compost toilet I can't even see them coming - and they love the soft bits.

Pine oil is the traditional deterrent here.

I think the noseeums came first, actually. I got bit several times yesterday on the boat in bright sunlight. Damn things.

If I could move anywhere, it would be to Cave Creek AZ. Was out that way last January. Awesome. You're lucky you live there my friend!

He does this Bear Grylls imitation (from Man vs Wild) and says, "The mosquitoes are relentless!" in this terrible British accent. It's funny, and makes the annoyance factor slightly less.

Nothing here yet but when they show we also get greenheads with the other two.

We get clouds of them at work. They swarm around trees and lights. Looks like something is on fire. Fortunately, most of them do not bite. Half of them are probably gnats.

All the mosquitoes and gnats make for a lot of spiders too. Thousands of spiders. Seriously, there are so many webs spanning across walkways that it gets hard to walk. Need a damn machete.

And wolf spiders the size of tarantulas.

Mosquitos are terrible fliers. If you are outdoors, try to keep a fan around. The mosquitos won't touch you with that fan blowing.
