Ok so this morning I was having my Kaos Monster energy drink and was thinking this might taste good in beer.
Has anyone tried combining a monster drink with their brew and if so how did you go about it? How'd it come out?
If used in the boiling did the added sugars give it more acohol content?
Just thinking here. LOL

Never tried it, but had considered spiking a batch with a couple of those 5-hour energy mini-bottles at bottling time to create a "Energy Brew". Haven't done it. Haven't actually ever actually tried those 5-hour energy drinks either. So it remains just and idea at this point.

I havent' brought my self to purchase one of those little 5 hour shots, even thought I want to. The price is just to high for something so tinny... at least for 2bucks I can enjoy the monster for a bit.

IMO, that would be gross. I think budweiser did it a few years ago and it's was gross.

Plus Monster is an enemy of the beer world since trying to sue a micro brewery in the northeast for using the word 'monster' in their Barley wine.

I've never liked the idea of mixing caffiene and alcohol. Not sure exactly what is in there but I'm sure there is some caffiene.

lots. and medically speaking its not good for you to mix. it "probably" won't kill you, but still not so good of an idea. Alcohol is a "downer" and caffeine is an "upper". Alcohol constricts blood vessels, caffeine is a vasodilator[opens veins]. Also a lot of the energy drinks have some blend of herbs and acids like ginsing, taurine and various other things. I'm not trying to be Buzzy McKillington, I have been known to do a few bombs of the jager variety, but its not something you would want to do in excess or over an extended period of time. :mug:

Indeed. The "Vermonster" by Rock Art Brewery in Vermont. There's a pretty cool video about the whole ordeal:

These energy drinks all have a metallic taste that is only slightly muffled by the massive amount of sugar. I predict you will be left with a very unpleasant taste after all the sugar ferments out.

I guess my question is what's the point? If the point is to get some of the components of an energy drink into the beer then perhaps you can get some of them in raw form? Beer already has a healthy amount of B vitamins, which are a main component of energy drinks. The other common ingredients are Ginseng, Caffeine and Taurine.

This leads me another thought about adding common supplements like chondroitin/glucosamine (joint health), lycopene (heart health) or even creatine (muscle cell fluid retention) to beer. Creatine doesn't dissolve very well though. You could make it like Jamba Juice and add "boosts" to your beer while serving....joking of course.

Funny that you're talking about spiking an alcoholic beverage with something that makes you more sober. Ha. But I guess it would be interesting... never know until you try (though I personally wouldn't want to try it). Let us know how it turns out.

I have to admit I am currently looking for a new brew project and this has piqued my interest. Not using actual energy drink of course, just the part that makes them "sour". I am looking up what this is now, but I would guess citric acid concentrate... MMMMmmmm Lemonhead blonde sour... gotta go make up a grain bill brb

FreeM80s yeah I dont' think it would be something I'd want to drink on a normal basis. I like to have a beer to calm me down and help me sleep better at night.. But for those midday BBQ's when a little energy would be nice to along with a brew. :D lol..

looks like it's and interesting topic though. :)

Get more sleep. The more I read about this topic the worse the idea becomes. I'm 99.9% convinced this is a surefire way to waste 3 weeks of a primary's time and 3 weeks of a bottle's time.

For starters, why don't you just mix an already made beer with one and see how it tastes? I'm guessing it will taste disgusting.

Beernoisseur quote made me loll

Oh man, LOL indeed.

Stick to the space you know. When I want a condom, I go with Trojan. When I want an energy drink, I go to Redbull. When I want a beer- I am choosy. You can be damn sure that if Budweiser ever starts making condoms, I'd buy a gun and some ammunition. The end of the world couldn't be that far off.

HAhA the more I read the more I agree with you..
maybe not the brightest Idea I've ever had. :drunk:
And man I wish i could get more sleep:( Some things just aren't always possible.

I used to do promo work for monster and drove around in the big monster truck giving out sample monsters. :) It would be an interesting combination, however i think it may end in failure lol.

you could just bypass the whole "monster" thing and buy some caffeine tablets. :/

last time I had any type of "energy" beer, it was some nasty **** called "Joose" and it made me violently ill. It couldn't have been all the vodka beforehand, it was definitely the Joose. :ban:

I think that wouldn't do as much as you think. The 5 hour energy drinks just bomb you with b vitamins, which homebrew has a ton of anyway from the yeast left in suspension. I would really like to know the numbers but I imagine that swirling up the small yeast cake at the bottom of a bottle of homebrew would get you pretty close to most of the b vitamins in 5-hour.

so it only took to reply #3 to bring this up. I agree with IP but if you do try it make sure to rub it in hansens face

I think Miller or somebody else makes "Sparks" which is energy drink and "malt liquor". I don't know if it's malt liquor in the sense of Old English or it's malt liquor because they have to brand it that way in Texas. Either way, it's horrible.

Something like this could work, though it tastes kinda like tea:

Not to bash this thought...But hey! If no one ever tries ideas that seem bad, then think of the great things we would be missing out on. Sheesh im sure there were people back in the day that thought fermenting barley juice and adding "eww" bitter hops was a surefire way to waste time.

I think you should try it, and post pictures :ban:
