Ahhh....The Good Life
Good afternoon everyone. I new here but not to beer 😛. It looks like I will be in and out of milwaukee for the next several months, I'm from Los Angles. Can anyone recommend things to do or see, good places for beer? Been to New Glarus, Lake Front and a couple of small places in between. Anyone wanna meet up? Wanna trade beer?

Thanks

Tim

Milwaukee Art Museum is pretty cool
Karl Ratzsch's If you like German Food and are on a expense account
Mader's Restaurant If you like German Food and are on a expense account
Usingers
Public Market downtown in nice too

If you like Belgian beers check out the Cafe Hollander in Wauwatosa. A great selection of beers and their mussels are really tasty.

Must go to Milwaukee Ale House. Don't bother with the other brew pubs around.

As part of the Great Milwaukee Brewery tour (myself and Dad) these were great places.
Milwaukee Ale House
Vintage Brewery in MIddleton (Madison) [Awesome small brewery]
Capital Brewery in Madison
New Glarus [natch]
Lakefront (Mke)

If its still there, try The Safehouse - fun place. Its worth your time to go to Madison (90 mins)

It's been 5 years or so since I lived there, so I would double check my information before making a final plan.

For a nice ambiance and good food, I would go to Water Buffalo in the Third Ward, it's on Water street and Buffalo I think.

My wife and I used to love going to Water Street Brewery for the hot bacon spinach salad and the pretzels.

It may be too late in the year, but Lakefront Brewery used to have fish frys on Fridays which were a blast, very fun experience.

And since no one else has said it, try Sanford restaurant in the lower east side. It is the best place in Milwaukee and a top restaurant in the country. It's small and expensive, but it is probably top 3 restaurant I have eaten at in my life. Apparently it was sold to the head chef since I have been, but people seem to say the food has not changed. To top it off, they have apparently partnered with a brewery and have some exclusive beers, so that would be worth it alone in my opinion. Last I went, I had a cup of coffee that was hand blended and roasted by the chef. It was so good I am posting about it here. I can only imagine his beer would be just as good.

Thanks for all the ideas, please keep them coming. Sanford sounds like a great place. Maybe when my wife comes out we can try it for dinner.

If you have the time check out the beer garden in Estabrook Park. Next best thing to being in Munich, very fresh Hofbräuhaus beers ein mass.

I would recommend Sobelmans - hole-in-the-wall dive bar, but also a restaurant with awesome burgers. It's a local milwaukee go-to place. Along those lines, Saz's is classic Milwaukee too. It's BBQ, pretty good.

If you're looking for a good experience, I would recommend the Safe House bar. It's a spy-themed bar with little tricks hidden all over, and a pretty cool atmosphere. But, it's probably best to go with someone else for the full experience. Note that you probably won't find much craft beer there though.

My wife and I have enjoyed The Rumpus Room when we've been in Milwaukee. There are a couple other pubs around there at at least one small brewpub within a block or two. We also liked Comet Cafe for breakfast, including a Hoegaarden Beermosa.

Breweries:
The Milwaukee Brewing Company has really elevated their game so I recommend that tour. Brenner Brewing is a new brewery but I haven't been yet. Sprecher has a good tour too.

Beer bars:
The Bayview neighborhood is a good place to start. Talk to some bartenders for recommendations. I'd go to Sugar Maple, Stone, Central, or Highbury to start. On the Eastside I'd try Hooligan's, BBC, Stubby's, or Cafe Hollander. Brady Street is another popular drinking street.

Restaurants: depending on what you're in the mood for you can find some great places. Sanford is a James Beard place. I'd skip Saz's if you want BBQ. Try Speed Queen, Ashley's, or the Smoke Shack. My favorite burgers are from Oscars and the casino. If you want Mexican food, hit up any small place or truck on the south side. Seoul is the best Korean food. Thai BBQ is my favorite Thai joint. Braise and Hinterland are foodie restaurants. Triskeles may still have all you can eat mussels on Tuesdays. La Reve is some amazing French food.
