I own the Verona Wine Cellar (in Verona, suburb of Madison, WI), we have 10 cooler doors of brew, one of which holds the Miller/Coors swill. I am seriously debating taking it off the shelf and giving it back to the distributor. Upsides are twofold: 1) I can stand up for the craft brewers (which is about 90% of our beer business anyhow, and margins suck on Miller/Coors) 2) More room for craft brews. Anyone have any feedback on this from a business standpoint? Good decision? Bad decision?

Personally, I think it would be refreshing to go into a liquor store and not see a bunch of BMC, especially if it clears the way for hard to find beers. As far as it being a good or bad business decision I wouldn't know, however if you feel that your business can survive and thrive without it then give it a whirl and good luck.

What kind of backlash will you get from your distributor?

Even if it is a small part of your business and has small margins, it is still money. I guess you have to figure out if the beers you add will balance out the loss in business.

If you are considering pulling Miller/Coors are you also considering pulling Bud?

A guy walks into your store and see's you don't carry Miller beer will never come back. The incidentals you sell along with a beer purchase will also be lost. Standing up for craft beer is one thing, cutting your sales for a principal is another. When I was a kid the store I worked at sold milk for less than it cost us. It got people into the store and we profited by selling other items to them. Maybe one day those BMC guy's will try a craft brew and you will have a new customer for the higher margin stuff.

Thanks for the input. I've decided to keep it on the shelf, but with a small price increase. MillerCoors: 1 The little guy: 1/32. Woohoo..one thirty-second of a point!! Just tryin to do my part...LOL.
