If the recipe reads..

.5 magnum (60 min)
1.5 Cascade (10 min)
1.5 Cascade (0 min)

I boil each of those for the time stated? 60 min of .5, 10 min of cascade and I dry hop the other cascade? It is a pale ale..

For the grains how long do I steep the grains all the way through the boil at 155?

Sorry for more noob questions but I don't know what I will do if I don't get a batch of beer that tastes decent. :(

You have the hop additions right, except for the 0 min Addition. That is a Flame out addtion. Hence, Kill the heat, then add the hops. It's an Aroma Hop. As far as the Grain thing, someone else will chime in as I have not done any sort of Extract/Partial Mash Brewing in quite some time and I do not want to steer you in the wrong direction.

Remember, Don't Worry, Have a Home Brew and ENJOY THE BREWING!!! :mug:

Don't boil the grains.

Depends on the kit, but bring 2 gallons or so of water up to 155*, flame out, toss the grains and let them steep for however long it calls for. (20-30 minutes usually). Then remove them and fire the burner back up.

Ok so... this is my time line...

See I boiled the grains last time soo that explains some problems.. This is my time line then..

20 min of grains at 150 to be safe rite?

Pull grains...

60 mins boil of .5 mag
10 min of cascade
Turn off heat.. add more cascade..

Can I add the clearing tablet with the hops or do I just boil that alone for 15 min??

I'm assuming you're talking about whirlfloc. Add it when there's 10 min left to go with your boil.

you can pop it in at the same time as your hop addition.

So you just turn off the burner? I read that some people add it to cold water then slowly bring it up to 155.

Here's what I do (got the method from a Canadian homebrew supply website):

I fill two smaller pots with about a half gallon of water. I bring one to 150-155, and add my steeping grains. The other I bring to a boil, kill the heat and cover. Meanwhile, I throw 2.5 gallons in my brew kettle (5 gal), and start bringing it to a boil. By the time that is boiling, my grains have steeped for 45 mins or so. I then pour the steeping grains through a strainer into the brew kettle. I then pour the other half gallon I boiled through the strainer and grains (called sparging), and end up with about 3.5 gal in my kettle. Once this is back up to boiling, I'll add my extract, hops, irish moss, etc. as called for by the recipe.

I forgot to ask when to add the malt? I already did the grains..

Ok I see. Still doing good besides I can't get boil with the lid off :(

I just notice a little bit of the the stuff from the last brew stuck in the carboy. It is only a few specs and I don't have my brushes to get it out.. I hope starsan is enough :(

its not. you might be okay anyway but....

Got any oxyclean?

I have bleach but still.. No brushes.

If you don't have oxyclean or PBW, you could use some surfactant like dish soap if you needed too. Put a little water, soap, and an old rag in the carboy and shake it up. Rinse well and then shake the starsan or a 10% bleach solution in the carboy and drip dry. That's how I'd do it in your situation.

Hey Tiako,
I recommend that you read sections 1 and 2 of How to Brew:
http://www.howtobrew.com/intro.html

There's a lot of good information in there that will probably help your beers become better. Don't get discouraged from your bad batches. It takes a long time to learn the finer points of the hobby.

Thanks I think I got it this time. :mug:

My wort cooled in under 15 min and I pitched yeast at the correct temp and I have a cooler this time around. Last time my batch got up to 80..
