I have a Cereal Killer mill that works really well. It has indicators on the adjustment that you can use to estimate the width of the rollers, but I'd like to measure them to be able to get a repeatable crush.

My question is this: The rollers have little nubs on them. Do I measure the width between the areas between the nubs on each roller, between the nub on one to the area between on the other, or between the nubs on each roller. In other words, each roller has "peaks" (the nubs) and "valleys" (the area between the nubs). Do I measure valley to valley, peak to peak or valley to peak?

Use a set of feeler gauges to check your gap. Check the gap on each end and in the middle. Don’t get stressed out about measuring the nubs, etc., the feeler gauges will overlap these areas. Your rollers will wear over time and the malt will begin to take the path of least resistance, so you may need to make adjustments over time and take an average of the the three different readings (from the ends and the middle) and adjust accordingly. This is exactly how we check/adjust our rollers at the brewery and we make adjustments if a variance of .05 mm or greater is found, so we’re running a pretty tight tolerance. If this works for us, I’m sure it would work for you.
