created my first batch of mead yesterday, but like an idiot i forgot to take an og reading.

will someone please help me estimate the OG? i used 8 lbs honey in 3 gallon batch. (added some navel oranges for flavor too).

OG estimates? thanks

I would guess around 1.100.

I'm assuming this is 3 gallons total volume, rather than 3 gallons water plus honey. Sugar content of honey varies a bit, but I use 37 points per pound as an average. So, 37 points times 8 pounds of honey equals 296 points of gravity. Divide that by 3 gallons and you get 99 (or 1.099). The oranges will add about one point for every pound.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree, using hightest's spreadsheet I got an estimate OG of 1.095. If you meant 3 gallons of water + 8 lbs it would be more like 1.077. Also it would be a bit higher for the sugar content of the oranges.

hmmm good point. thanks for the help too.

it is split up over 3 different jugs ( 4 liter wine bottles) so i would say no there isnt 3 gallons of actual water.

thanks guys
