Mashing technique

I am going to be brewing my first all grain batch in my three tiered system. My question is after pulling off the first runnings; how do you get them back into the mash kettle without destroying the grain bed, or is it ok to stir before sparging. I have heard and read conflicting information about stirring before sparging.

Any advice? Thank you.

If the grain bed is thick enough, pouring gently from a pitcher or even from the hose (using a pump in my case) will not disturb the grain bed.

Sure, you could re-stir the mash, but you'd also have to recirculate to get the grain bed established again. It just takes a bit longer.

I just use a rain style watering can to return it to the MT.

I have no problem just dumping it back in. Just don't do a whole bunch at one time.
