I neglected to mark where 5 gallons on my carboy was and ended up with probably 3 gallons.

Don't let this happen to you.
Mark your carboys.

I got a BB in a trade already marked. But I have a 1 gallon jug I marked using a 2C measure in quarts to a gallon. Gunna use that to make sure it's acurately marked. Always a good idea to do.

Wow a mighty active fermentation you had there! Looks neat.

And doh, it does look a little less filled than my 6.5 gallons carboys that are filled with 5 gallons.

Funny story. I finished primary fermentation on a hefe and kegged it while brewing a jack o lantern to fill the newly emptied 6.5 carboy. I had marked the 5 gallon mark on the outside in 3 places with a sharpie marker that seemed to not rub off. While letting the inside soak in one step and star san I went outside to attend my brew. My sweet little ol' mom found it soaking and decided to be helpful by cleaning the carboy inside and out. I came back inside ready to dump the sanitizing solution out of the carboy and dump my beer in. Mom proudly presented my my thoroughly cleaned inside and OUT carboy (now void of its 5 gallon marks :drunk:). I didn't have the heart to tell her so I thanked her very much, took it outside and refilled and marked it again. Made me chuckle.

Good luck with your brew!

That's funny. At least she had good intentions.

I can see missing by maybe a half a gallon, but 2 gallons???

Marking my Better Bottles is only a confirmation since I know the amount during the different steps of the brew. I do have to readjust now that I am kegging. I was making a bit over 5 gallons when bottling. Now, that much will not fit in my kegs.

There was a ton of foam at the top when I put it into the carboy. It was actually all the way up to the point where the carboy curves. It was a very stupid mistake (especially since it is a DFH 60 minute clone.) hence the warning to mark your carboys
