I'm going to make a pair of SMASH IPA's, one with Summit Hops and one with Crystal hops.

What do you recommend as a base malt?

I really enjoy Maris Otter or Golden Promise. With those you will get a nice bready malt character. I find that just plain American 2-row leaves a bit to be desired in the flavor dept.

Great Western American Pale Malt is nice. It is a 3L malt similar to British Pale Malt. If you mash a little lower and a little longer, it produces a nice color and lots of sugar. It will dry out a little more than standard 2-row will and the color will give a nice light golden hue. Plus it is cheaper than Marris Otter.
