Hello All,

New to home brewing, new to barley malting also. Tried malting first 50lb bag of 6 row barley bought at local farm supply store. The grain was surprising very clean of other 'stuff' such as wheat weeds etc. the malting process went very smooth.

Question in regards to making some crystal malt,,after watching several youtubes of people doing this ,along with he forums here. There is of course quite a range in the techniques used for this. Both pans i made ends up with a very considerable amount of what feels, and slightly looks like light syrupy substance at end of oven process. I never see or hear of this in the videos. Did i probably get the barley to warm,or is this to be expected?

Thanks.

Maybe too wet?

Crystal malt is made by stewing, mashing inside the grains, then kiln it to various colors. I've never made crystal malt, so don't know what to expect or where the turning signs are.
