I rarely go to the range. I really don't enjoy it. Maybe I'm a hedonist.
If we are not counting warming up before a round, I go to the range about once a week. But I hit balls into my backyard net everyday because it's one of my favorite things to do. And I'm slightly obsessed. (My wife would disagree with the slightly part).

Been there, done that.

Our former next door neighbor had the golf bug really bad. He was always pitching and hitting into a backyard net, and played 2-3 times per week at our local course a quarter mile away down our county road.

When they downsized a few years ago and built their ‘forever house’, he specified 10’ ceilings in the basement and installed his own indoor range. I’ve hit on it once or twice, and it’s as good as the one I hit on when I got a professional club fitting from a well-known pro fitter. It has a number of courses programmed in, similar to the computer desktop programs.

It’s truly amazing how realistic the rendering is and how accurately the high speed cameras capture your swing/contact/speed to predict where the ball would end up on the real course. Quite a toy, if you can afford it.

Lately I've been thinking about getting a simple launch monitor, since they are available now for a few hundred dollars (maybe not as accurate as Trackman, but getting closer). But, truth be known, it would be more as a toy than a learning device now. Maybe later when I'm finding the center of the clubface more consistently and I want to feel the difference between, say, a 55 yard wedge and a 65 yard wedge shot.

I'd love to set up a full sim at home. Man that'd be awesome.
Yeah, it’s really pretty cool. My former neighbor does admit that he likes being able to ‘play’ during the Mid-Atlantic winters. But he also says that even though it reinforces muscle memory, that isn’t necessarily a good thing. What he’s gained in consistency is often the strengthening of bad habits.

In other words, his game has not improved much, but at least he doesn’t get sore from not playing regularly.

I bought one. The Garmin R10. The goal was for use in the backyard hitting net, and one of the main hopes was dialing in partial wedge distances.

But I rarely use it. Problem for me is that my backyard hitting net isn't big enough and I'm terrified I'll launch one that goes awry and ends up hitting a neighbor's house somewhere. So when I hit out there I use foam balls which won't net me any good data. And on the driving range I'm hitting some of the worst range balls I've ever seen, so I can't really trust the data I get there.

Odd that it would reinforce bad habits. One of the other reasons I wanted the R10 is that you can't see ballflight into a net, but if you have a launch monitor, you know whether you're hitting it badly. You have all the path and ball data you need to know where the ball would end up--and it shows up right there on the screen in front of you.

The same with my friends simulator, although you do see a tracker trace, similar to what you see during a televised golf tournament. You also get an instant read out of club speed, ball speed, side spin, etc. So you get a data-based readout in addition to visual feedback.

What I was referring to is the lack of feedback relative to your actual swing mechanics, which you get from a golf pro who is videoing you on the practice tee. There have many times on the driving range when I can ‘see’ the result of the miss-hit, but may be clueless as to what I did wrong or how to correct it. Thus I might be reinforcing a bad habit and instilling bad muscle memory.

I don’t think there’s any better source for that than a good teaching pro. Often a minor tweak with grip or not over-swinging will cure a push or duck hook pull.

Ahh. Makes sense. Which is when it's good to make sure you're videoing your swing, and if you have a regular relationship with a teaching pro, that you can send them videos from time to time as checkins.

I probably take my phone to the range about 1/3 of the time, and have a cheap tripod from Amazon, so that I can make sure that I have video of what I'm working on.

I started at 3pm and the shop told me I was the only person on the course. Finished 18, empty lot when I got off. Man I love golf in FL. I was the ONLY PERSON ON THE COURSE THE WHOLE TIME.

This is the 18. As you can see, a little creek runs in front of the green there. Water on the right (when you're approaching). The tee box is way back behind the trees on the right. It's my fave hole. I got on in two with a good drive and a great 2nd shot onto the green.

Beautiful day. Headed down to the coast as I've been dying to visit a new brewery location. Teamed up with a pair of friends that grew up together one is a D3 QB. My cart was a 77 yo member. Team grey kicked ass. Best part was before the other cart showed up my partner wanted to play from the silvers. I was like aah I'll play from the whites. The youngsters showed up and wanted to push me back to the blues. Everyone had a fun time. Practice facilities are immense

And I was drinking. Birdied #16

Had a legit chance of a birdie the last three holes including the 18th hole from 210 yds. Pin was all the way back just to the right of the fountain. Made it to 8' past the pin but missed the putt. Nicklaus courses always punish if you push. I was in a grove

That 77 yo has it made. I'd highly recommend Waverly, Crosswinds and especially Pine hills. The weather off the ocean can really play games with your mind. I've played many of those courses with close to hurricane winds and/or snow. There's a bunch of private courses too. Only thing is for me the traffic and cape competition to get there. It's a day event for me well worth it. If I didn't hate paying taxes so much I'd easily contemplate retiring there. Great golf and food. There's a whole complex of condos even with their own fire station and general store. Easy living

Yea. Saw that on the news when I came home. Goes all the way up to Boston. Theyre going to start spraying. I didn't run into any bugs but I was playing in peak afternoon

A friend of mine was infected with St. Louis encephalitis years ago when we worked together in southeast Texas. After a couple of days in the hospital and a couple of weeks worth of pounding headaches he was ok. Before the doctor had a positive diagnosis whether it was or wasn't a highly infectious meningitis, he heard the nurses arguing outside his room about who was going to tend to him. "I'm not going in there, I have young children at home. You go."

There were "only" three confirmed cases in the area that year, so it was like the reverse of winning the lottery.

Been playing consistently down here. Weather is just now getting to where it's comfortable to walk 18. Played a couple of days ago (9/11), course had the colors on 9 & 18. Go America. Say what you want about florida man, but he's patriotic for sure.
