Lost yeast from starter blow off

Just got home from a 14 1/2 hour shift of getting puked on, spit on, crapped on, cussed at, rained on, crawling in the mud pulling drunks out of ditches only to get home to find my house with no water because of a county water main repair up the road just to find my yeast has blew his top too. I hope this is no indication of how my double brew day is going to go tomorrow. Grrrr

In all seriousness, is the little bit of yeast lost in this 800ml starter going to make much difference?

Dang, I would trade a finished carboy of beer for a long, cold shower and someone to come deal with the 5 gallons that needs bottled today, 5 that needs transferred and to rush along 5 that refuses to finish. Going to squeeze in a nappy before jumping on the lawn tractor for a good 7 hours of mowing before the rain comes back tonight. No chores today = no play tomorrow. Uggggg. Back to work Sunday. When I clean the kettle up tomorrow, I'm hanging it up for a while.

That's a bad day man.

My WLP 300 didn't foam up quite that bad this week. But it did enough that I worried about it a little and I'm planning on duel blowoffs for my two brews this weekend.

It doesn't look like you lost very much. It's probably within the margin of error of the calculation. I wouldn't worry about it.

Your job sounds remarkably similar to mine. Hang in there. Had plenty of days like that myself.

That being said, had this happen to my first starter. Everything went fine with the fermentation (relatively speaking, but that's a whole other story). That is the exact reason I use fermcap in all my starters now. Haven't had a problem since *knocks on wood*.

Yeah, I keep forgetting to order the dang stuff. If you'll notice the cookie sheet, it's not like I haven't had a chance to learn my lesson. I've never used it before, so I can't remember to ask for it.

In the spirit of commiserating:

After posting, I started reorganizing my garage and ferm chamber for brewday tomorrow. I had my starter chilling in the ferm chamber for decanting and pitching.

My flask cracked. Bad.

Just spent the last hour rousing the yeast and transferring it to a 1 gallon jug.

Oh well... I needed to buy a 2L flask anyway.

True, but the neck was close to completely breaking off. And the borosilicate doesn't make shards. So I don't have to worry about glass in the beer.

I think from now on, after I get the 2L, I'm going to double boiler it in my canning pot and store it in my cellar instead of in the garage with the other brew equipment.

The same thing happened to me yesterday, Including your job description and came home to a 2L starter that blew off almost 300ml of yeast that I was planning on splitting for a double brew day. Woke up this morning to find both bubbling away

Both ended up doing quite well. They are still going as I type this. The batch from the smaller flask might be just a lil weaker, but it's a lighter gravity American Wheat so I would not expect too much of a vigerious fermentation. The lag time might have been just a lil longer too, but then again, totally different yeast from the other. I have since purchased me another 2 liter flask and ordered me some Fermcap S to use in my next starters. Looking forward to getting my freezer empty so I can brew again.

Here they are a few days ago. The Wisconsin Red was blowing stuff out like a mad bull. It has since settled down. I would expect it to pick back up when I transfer it on top of 6 lbs of cherries next week.

As for the crappy night, man I was just glad to get away from my job. It can be very rewarding when you know the things you do can help those in their darkest moments, but toss a few crackhead drunks in the puzzle and you get to hatting it pretty fast. I've been in EMS since 1989 and my willingness to be tolerant to stupid people often does not make onto the scene with me. lol
