I wanted to take the expert advice and try aerating my mead during the first few days of fermentation as well as adding nutrient/energizer.
Well, today was 48 hours after pitching the yeast so I was on day 2 of aerating and might have gotten a little overzealous with my aeration and caused quite the carbonation explosion. All in all I probably lost about 2 cups worth of mead for a 1 gallon batch
I guess on the bright side I'll be racking onto 3 lbs of blueberries in a couple weeks which will fill up that lost space.
A few questions though...
1. Since it's so early into fermentation should I add any more water to top up the mead or just leave it alone?
2. Without having any fancy vacuum devices, what's the best way you've found to aerate a small batch of mead? I'm a little nervous to do anything other than light swirling now but i'm not sure if that'll actually accomplish anything aside from degassing.
//edit: title says degassing but it should have said aerating
