I'm in the market for a 50 or 55lb bag of pilsen malt. I've contacted Scott Labs in Pickering and they don't carry Briess (or anything else) anymore. Grain Processes in Scarborough has a large selection but no pilsen malt (and won't order it). I found a source or two outside the GTA asking $50-$70 or more. Is there anything closer and cheaper?

You can join the group Southern Ontario Brewers as we do grain bulk purchases occasionally. Unfortunately for you, we just had one a few weeks ago...

Pilsner Malt was around $35-$40 a 25kg bag if I remember correctly.

Unfortunately, I'm not in Southern Ontario. I live in Sudbury and make 2 or 3 trips to the TO area a year. Where do the SOBs buy their grain?

It gets shipped to Amsterdam brewery in Toronto, but most people in the group are pretty helpful and if someone out your way is picking some up, they could bring it at least part way.

Something to keep in mind at least.

Awesome! It might be worth getting a pal down that way to pick it up and hold it for me. Thanks a lot!

In the meantime, I'll be in the GTA this Friday. Is there any place you think I should check out? (Even not for bulk grain)

Well, the amsterdam brewery is a cool stop to check out, but I'm not actually from the GTA myself so I don't really know of any good spots.

If you join up on the SOB boards, I'm sure someone there can point you in the right direction :)

You could hit Randy's new shop. Big homebrew shop where you can browse and buy right from the shelf.

If you want great beer, hit up C'est What and/or Bar Volo.

And yeah, I suggest joining the SOB'ers. I live in Parry Sound, and participate in all the grain bulk buys. $27 for a 55lb bag of 2-row!!!

FYI, we get our grain from Gilbertson & Page in Fergus, so if you don't mind driving there (100km outside of the city) you can get the grain yourself. I believe pilsner is $35/bag. You just have to call ahead so they make sure they have it ready for you.
