I am looking for an extract kit that comes as close as possible to Golden Road's Wolf Pup IPA. It had a wonderful heavy pine flavor that I loved! Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!! -Jay

Here is the profile from Golden Roads website:

Available: Year Round
Style: Session IPA
OG/FG: 10.8/3.2
ABV: 4.5%
IBU: 50
Malts: 2-Row, Maris Otter, Malted Rye, Crisp Dextrin Malt
Hops: Cascade, Simcoe, Chinook, Equinox, Mosaic, and Galaxy

Notes:

Hoppy and refreshing, Wolf Pup is our riff on a Session IPA. Highly drinkable with a wildly aromatic tropical and citrus character, it’s the perfect companion to keep on sippin’ for those long, sunny days.

Looks like a session IPA, there aren't many out there like this. I just made a session IPA for my pool and I love it.
I have never had this one but it sounds heavy on the cascade dry hopping with some taste attributed by simcoe.

Here is a recipe guess.
mini-mash with 1.5 lb of rye and .5 lb of carapils at 150F for 30 min.
Boil a high alpha "c" hop for 60 minutes to achieve close to 50ibu; for example 1 oz chinook will get you 40 ibu whereas 1oz of CTZ will get you 50 ibu.
Cut off the fire and mix in 6.5lbs of LME and Whirlfloc if you have some. Bring it back to boil for 5 minutes or so to make sure it is mixed in well. At flameout add 2oz of Simcoe, whirlpool and cool.
Dry hop with 4 oz of cascade for citrus aroma the last 3-4 days of fermentation. If you want more pine aroma mix in Simcoe with cascade.

This should get your OG at 1.046, expected ABV 4.52% with a FG of 1.012.
Use a clean ale yeast, like S05. Good luck.

It will take some research, but you have the information you need. Northern Brewer lists the ingredients in all their kits. So you could look at all their IPAs, compare and see which is closest.

My guess is that you will be hard pressed to find a kit that is really close. Most won't have Rye Malt, and that is a pretty big range of hops. You might get a kit with some of them but almost certainly not all of them. That is unless someone has made a clone of the beer.

Session IPA kits are also pretty rare.
Mainly because they cost roughly the same as a regular IPA due to the hops driving the majority of cost. Most folks will choose a similarly priced 7% IPA over a "lite" 4.5% IPA.

I think this looks pretty good. I'd probably leave the Carapils out of the mash and use Briess Golden Light since it already has Carapils in it. I'd also dry hop with a combination of the hops above and not just Simcoe. A Simcoe / Cascade blend would be great.

Why not just buy one of these? Sure they are different, but are they that different? After all they are commissioned by Golden Road

I have the extract wolf among weeds on day 11 in my fermentor with the first round of dry hops in... I don't like IPA's that much but this one is pretty good and smells glorious so far!

It probably isn't a bad idea to get the Wolf among Weeds and cut it down.
They only use .5lb of rye, so just a small taste. Cut out the corn sugar completely and cut down on the rest; use 7lbs of fermentables instead of 11.
You may want to cut the hop additions a little, they may be a bit overpowering for a lower ABV beer. Plug them into your favorite software program and adjust them down to 50ibu.
They are also dry hopping the crap out of it, I would cut this down to 4oz total. 6oz if you are really a hop head. These numbers look fine for a 8% beer but not for a 4.5% lite beer.

Alternatively, don't mess with the recipe but instead use it to brew 8-9 gallons. This will cut down the ABV and hop impact; essentially watering it down but preserving the character.
